Storm Suffers Tough Defeat Late In Game Two Of Twinbill
KISSIMMEE, FLA – Facing a pair of traditionally strong teams, Lake Erie College fell to #23 Augustana (S.D) College, 12-0 in five innings and to Minnesota State University-Moorhead, 6-4, in a twinbill at the Rebel Spring Games.
After a scoreless first inning in the nightcap vs. MSU-Moorhead, the Storm loaded the bases with one out in the second. A base running error threatened to end the rally but Lake Erie overcame it to get on the board when sophomore right fielder Jeniffer Gratz (Richwood, Ohio/North Union) singled in sophomore second baseman Krista Haley (Holland, Ohio/Springfield Holland). Gratz advanced to second on the play and it proved valuable when she scored along with senior center fielder Haley Rathge (Edon, Ohio/Napoleon) on a two-run single by sophomore catcher Fayth Atkins (Holland, Ohio/Springfield).
Sophomore Dawn Ondercin (Sheffield, Ohio/Brookside) cruised through the first two innings before running into a jam in the third inning with back-to-back walks to begin the inning. However Ondercin settled down and worked out of the jam. Moorhead got their first hit of the game to leadoff the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run to make the score 3-1. The next two Dragons hitters got hits as well but they were unable to plate anymore as Ondercin again worked out of the jam junior left fielder Chelsea Bleck (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) made an outstanding catch to save multiple runs.
Lake Erie added a run in the top of the fifth when sophomore Juliana Brotzman (Madison, Ohio/Madison) singled in redshirt freshman Maddi Klemp (Akron, Ohio/Coventry) with two outs. MSU responded with three straight singles in the bottom of the inning to score a run but for the third straight inning Ondercin escaped further damage with two runners on a no outs, with Brotzman catching a line drive for a key unassisted double play. Moorhead finally got to the Storm for a big inning in the sixth as three hits and a pair of errors led to four runs and a 6-4 advantage for MSU.
Bleck was able to bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh with a one out walk but Lake Erie was unable to come back in the seventh.
Klemp and senior first baseman Lindsey Pennell each had a pair of hits in the loss.
In game one against Augustana, senior Sam Ronde (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) kept things close in the early going, but was hurt by her defense which allowed unearned runs in both the first two innings. Augustana added another solo run in the third on a homer and broke the game open with five runs in the fourth. They added four more unearned runs in the fifth for the final 12-0 margin.
Rathge and Gratz had the lone hits for Lake Erie in the loss with Gratz walking in the contest as well.
Lake Erie will play two games tomorrow in its final day at the Rebel Spring Games.
