PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's lacrosse team was defeated today (March 25th) by Roberts Wesleyan, 13-12. With the loss the Storm falls to 2-4 overall and with the win Roberts Wesleyan improves to 6-4 overall.
On the first possession of the game Taylor Mathis (Corning, N.Y. / Corning) opened the scoring off of an assist by Taylor Izzo (Hamburg, N.Y. / Frontier), to give the Storm a 1-0 advantage. The Storm added to the lead when Samantha Gryba (Okotoks, Alberta / National Sport Academy) scored from a free position shot. Roberts Wesleyan tied the game with back to back goals. Mathis gave the Storm a 3-2 advantage when she scored from a free shot position. Roberts Wesleyan answered to tie the game at three goals apiece. Izzo scored from a free position shot to give the Storm a 4-3 advantage. Roberts Wesleyan scored two goals to take a 5-4 lead with 10 minutes left in the first half. Mathis scored her third goal of the game, and tied the game at 5 goals apiece. Roberts Wesleyan regained the lead with back to back goals to make the score, 7-5 in favor of Roberts Wesleyan. Roberts Wesleyan scored late in the half, and entered intermission with an 8-5 advantage.
Roberts Wesleyan opened the scoring in the second half with two goals, and took a 10-5 advantage. Gryba scored her second goal of the game from a free position shot make the score, 10-6 in favor of Roberts Wesleyan. Mathis scored an unassisted goal for the Storm and cut the lead to, 10-7. Roberts Wesleyan answered with a goal to make the score, 11-7. Anastasia Crawford (Corning, N.Y. / Corning Painted Post East) scored off of an assist by Haley Andersen (Henderson, Nev. / Coronado) to make the score, 11-8 in favor of Roberts Wesleyan. Izzo scored from a free position shot and cut the Roberts Wesleyan lead to 11-9 with 13 minutes to play. Roberts Wesleyan scored to make it a three goal game, 12-9. Izzo scored her third of the game, and cut the lead to two, 12-10 with seven minutes remaining in the game. Cecilla Spin (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) scored off of an assist by Mallory Quiggle (Lewis Center, Ohio / Olentangy) to get the Storm within one, 12-11 with 3:30 remaining in the game. Mathis scored her fifth goal of the game, and tied the game for the Storm at 12 goals apiece. The game remained tied at 12 as the Storm forced overtime.
Roberts Wesleyan won 13-12 as they scored the only goal of overtime.
The Storm was led by Mathis who had five goals, a ground ball, and a draw control. Izzo had three goals, and three ground balls.
Katie Holden (Whitby, Ontario / Anderson C.V.I.) was in net for the Storm, she faced 29 shots, 26 of which were on goal, and she made 13 saves.
Lake Erie will be back in action Thursday (April 2nd) when they travel to take on Tiffin at 6:30 P.M.
