Storm Opens Season With Win Over Notre Dame

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's lacrosse team was in action today as they defeated Notre Dame College, 18-7.  

The game started with both teams battling and after five scoreless minutes, Mallory Quiggle (Lewis Center, Ohio / Olentangy) gave the Storm the lead off of an assist by Taylor Mathis (Corning, N.Y. / Corning).  The Storm added to their lead when Anastasia Crawford (Corning, N.Y. / Corning Painted Post East) found the back of the net off of an assist by Cecilia Spin (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn).  The goal was set up when Haley Andersen (Henderson, Nev. / Coronado) caused a turnover.  About a minute later the Storm made the score, 3-0 when Kaci Asper (Syracuse, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse / Onondaga) scored off of an assist by Mathis.  The Falcons cut into the Storm lead with a goal, with 15 minutes remaining in the half.  The Storm answered the Falcons goal when C. Spin found the back of the net; the goal was set up when Quiggle caused a Notre Dame turnover.  Less than a minute later the Storm tacked on a fifth goal when Anna Spin (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) scored off of a free position shot, to give the Storm a 5-1 lead.  The Storm continued to pull away when Hana Abu-Kwiek (Lewis Center, Ohio / Olentangy Orange) scored to give the Storm a 6-1 advantage with a little over 10 minutes remaining in the half.  After five scoreless minutes, A. Spin found the back of the net for the Storm, and 20 seconds later Kayla Bohn (Louisville, Ky. / Eastern) scored to give the Storm an 8-1 advantage.  With less than five minutes remaining in the half Mathis gave the Storm a 9-1 lead.  The Storm entered the half with a 10-1 lead.  The Storm defense was solid as they only allowed three shots in the half.           

Both teams traded goals to start the second half with Asper scoring for the Storm.  The Falcons scored two more quick goals to make the score, 11-4 in favor of the Storm.  The Storm responded with two straight goals which were scored by A. Spin and Asper, before the Falcons scored to make the score 13-5 in favor of the Storm.  The Storm scored two more goals by C. Spin and Quiggle to give the Storm a 15-5 lead.  The Storm continued to dominate with three more goals in a five minute span with two goals by A. Spin and a goal by Mathis.  The Falcons scored two goals late, but the Storm won, 18-7.  The Storm defense played well in the game as they had 22 caused turnovers, and only allowed seven shots in the game.

The Storm was led by A. Spin as she had six goals and an assist.  A. Spin also won four draw controls and caused two turnovers.  The defense was led by both Bohn and Breana Moser (Gahanna, Ohio / Gahanna) as each had four ground balls and four caused turnovers.           

In net for the Storm was Katie Holden (Whitby, Ontario / Anderson C.V.I.) faced eight shots, made three saves and allowed three goals in the game. 

Lake Erie will be back in action Friday (March 11th) as they have their first home game against Gannon University at 7 P.M.
