LEBANON, Ill. – The Lake Erie College women's lacrosse team was in action today as they were victorious in overtime over McKendree University, 12-11.
The Storm jumped out to an early lead as Cecilia Spin (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) scored an unassisted goal in the first two minutes of the game. Anna Spin (Auburn, N.Y. / Auburn) gave the Storm a 2-0 lead off of a free position shot. After a Bearcats goal the Storm responded with four straight goals. A. Spin scored her second goal of the game off of a free position shot, and about a minute and a half later Anastasia Crawford (Corning, N.Y. / Corning Painted Post East) scored an unassisted goal for the Storm. After four scoreless minutes Mallory Quiggle (Lewis Center, Ohio / Olentangy) widened the Storm lead as she found the back of the net. Less than a minute later Crawford scored her second goal of the game off of an assist by Quiggle, to give the Storm a 6-1 advantage with just under 15 minutes to play in the half. After a McKendree goal Lake Erie tacked on two more goals as Carwford scored her third of the game off of an assist by A. Spin, and Kaci Asper (Syracuse, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse / Onondaga) scored off of an assist by Crawford. The Bearcats scored with less than a minute remaining in the half, but trailed the Storm 8-3 at the intermission.
The Bearcats started the second half with four straight goals, and cut the Storm lead to 8-7 with just over 17 minutes remaining in the game. Asper halted the Bearcats momentum as she scored her second goal of the game for the Storm off of an assist by A. Spin. A. Spin added to the Storm lead as she scored her third goal of the game off of a free position shot, to give the Storm a 10-7 advantage with a little more than 12 minutes left in the game. After two straight McKendree goals, Hana Abu-Kwiek (Lewis Center, Ohio / Olentangy Orange) scored for the Storm. The Bearcats scored twice in the final minute of the game to forced overtime.
The overtime started as a back and forth battle, and with a little more than a minute remaining the Storm got a yellow card and played a man down. Harmony Moore (Farmington, N.Y. / Canadaigua Academy) came up big in goal as she faced two McKendree shots and made a big save for the Storm. The Bearcats regained possession after the save, but Breana Moser (Gahanna, Ohio / Gahanna) forced a turnover for the Storm and started the clear before she found Abu-Kwiek in the offensive end. Abu-Kwiek then fed C. Spin inside the eight, and C. Spin found the back of the net to win the game for the Storm in the final second of overtime.
Lake Erie will be back in action Sunday (April 17th) when they travel to take on the University of Indianapolis at 12 P.M.
