Lake Erie Announces 2016-17 Scholar Athletes of the Year

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – Lake Erie College announced it's Scholar Athletes of the Year awards today (May 5) at the Honors Convocation ceremony.

The female Scholar Athlete of the Year was presented to Nadia Lee (Tucker, Ga. / Tucker) of the track and field team and the male Scholar Athlete of the Year was presented to Samuel Mutemwa (Johannesburg, South Africa / Sandringham High School) of the soccer team.

The list of accolades on and off the track is long and distinguished for Lee.  She has twice qualified for nationals in the triple jump and is an eight-time ALL-GLIAC performer.  Lee's most recent accomplishment was winning the GLIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship in the triple jump as she won today (May 5) with a jump that broke her own school record.  In the classroom Lee is just as impressive as she has been named a D-II Indoor and Outdoor All-Academic award winner for all four years of her collegiate career.  Lee has also been a mainstay on the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence team as she has received this honor five times in her illustrious career.  The native of Tucker, Georgia will be graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, and following graduation, she will be attending Boston University Law School on a full scholarship.

Lee's Head Coach Grant Lofdahl said "It's been an honor to work with her.  She is the type of person that a coach may get a few times in their career, if they're fortunate: the total package student-athlete.  She is outstanding in the classroom, works extremely hard at practice and enjoys doing it, has a consistently great attitude, and is a positive influence on everyone around her."

Mutemwa's career on and off the field for the Storm was second to none.  He was named All-Ohio first team and All-GLIAC second team during his senior campaign.  After the conclusion of his playing season at Lake Erie, Mutemwa signed on with the Cleveland Legacy of the Premier Arena Soccer League to continue his playing career.  Off the field he was named All-Ohio Academic First Team and was also named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team.  Mutemwa will be graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in International Business and plans to attend graduate school after graduation.

Lake Erie College's Athletic Director Reid Guarnieri said of Mutemwa, "Not only is he relentlessly driven in pursuit of his own individual goals and excellence but he also knows when to put his team and teammates first.  He is one of the most upbeat people I have ever had the pleasure of being around.  His spirit was infectious to everyone on the team.  He has a unique ability to inspire everyone around him through his positive energy and attitude."
