(PAINESVILLE, Ohio) - The Lake Erie Storm have set a new standard in the classroom. The Spring 2019 semester saw the department establish a new record with a 3.05 overall GPA, the highest of the NCAA DII era for Lake Erie.
The 3.05 semester GPA is the highest since the Storm began their DII transition in 2007. With nearly 400 student-athletes in 17 sports in 2018-19, the Storm saw the following landmarks achieved individually in Spring 2019:
- 156 student-athletes with a 3.0 or higher semester GPA
- 98 student-athletes with a 3.5 or higher semester GPA
- 21 student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 semester GPA
"In my first full academic year as the Director of Athletics at Lake Erie, we are so proud to see our student-athletes really embrace the opportunity to be a champion in the classroom, champion in their sport and champion in our community. This historic achievement is due to the efforts of our student-athletes, our full staff and the entire campus to empower our students to reach these academic heights," Director of Athletics Kelley Kish said.
The Men's Basketball team earned the highest GPA among Storm Male teams with a 3.29 semester GPA. Rising senior Gabe Kynard, a First-Team 2018-19 Google Cloud Academic All-District honoree, said "Striving to do my best in the pursuit of my degree is essentially striving to succeed post-graduation as I look to enter the workforce. Excelling academically tends to correlate directly to the work you are willing to do in the classroom i.e. studying, participating in class, completing homework, and seeking extra help when necessary."
The highest Storm Female team GPA was hotly contested between basketball and volleyball and only 0.08 separated those two teams. Women's basketball achieved a 3.60 and volleyball reached a 3.52.
|Rising senior Morgan Briggs of volleyball spoke to that academic competitiveness in the department. "Lake Erie College has become a stomping ground for students to excel. The opporunity for a high quality education while participating in college volleyball is something I value very much. We strive for greatness in the classroom and in our sport every day. A common drive for our success in academics has created a strong group of competitors. I feel supported and motivated by our coaches, administrators and professors to be the very best I can be in all aspects of my life while I'm working towards graduation.|
This accomplishment has resonated with the entire campus as Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and Institutional Effectiveness Dr. Bryan DePoy shared, "This accomplishment is representative of Lake Erie College's steadfast dedication to student academic success. Faculty, coaches, and academic support personnel played vital roles in ensuring a supportive and rigorous learning environment, and student-athletes are to be commended for committing to their studies."
