PAINESVILLE, OHIO - Lake Erie College (7-4) took both ends of a doubleheader against University of Charleston (5-14) in a non-conference twinbill in Charleston, W. Va.

The Storm took game one, 6-2 and won game two, 13-9, in a game cut short due to weather in the bottom of the sixth.    Lake Erie has now won five straight games.

In game one, the Storm struck first with a RBI single from senior outfielder Brandon James (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) drove home junior shortstop Ryan Rua (Amherst, Ohio/Amherst Steele).

The Golden Eagles knotted the score at 1-1 with an unearned run on the game's lone error in the third inning, but Lake Erie quickly broke the game open with four runs in the fourth.  James started the rally with a base hit and sophomore third baseman Cody Blood (Conneaut, Ohio/Conneaut) and sophomore outfielder Zachary Mosbarger (Bellefontaine, Ohio/Bellefontaine) each had RBI hits.

Charleston picked up a solo run in the bottom half of the fourth and the tally stayed 5-2 until the top of the seventh, when junior first baseman Jae Leeworthy (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) drove home Rua.

James and Leeworthy each accounted for a pair of the Storm's eight hits.

On the mound, junior Michael Backes (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) made his first start of the season and picked up the victory, working six innings and allowing two runs (one earned) and five hits while striking out three.

In game two, the Storm struck for four in the top of the first inning, as Rua doubled home a pair and James and sophomore catcher Pat Kilway (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) each singled in runs.

Charleston erased that lead with two in the first and solo runs in the second and third innings, but Lake Erie exploded for seven runs in the fourth to take a 11-4 advantage.  Junior second baseman Brayan Cacique (Caracas, Venezuela/Lakeland CC) and freshman third baseman Reid Rizzo (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) each had run scoring doubles in the frame and Kilway singled home two more.

The Golden Eagles chipped into that lead in the bottom half of the fourth, but Lake Erie matched those two runs in the top of the fifth as junior outfielder Kyle Kemp (Spotsylvania, Va./James Monroe) drove in Rua and James.

Charleston struck for three runs in the sixth and was still threatening when the game was cut short due to storms in the area.

Kemp and Rua each had three hits and drove in three runs in game two, while Kilway, Cacique, Rizzo, James and freshman outfielder Garrett Emling (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) all had a pair of base knocks.

Lake Erie is scheduled to be back in action this weekend on Saturday and Sunday as they host Grand Valley State to open its GLIAC slate.
