PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Nationally-ranked Mercyhurst University scored multiple runs in four innings en route to 12-5 victory over the Lake Erie College baseball team in nonconference action Wednesday (April 18) at Braggs Field.
The 24th-ranked Lakers(29-11) broke open a 2-1 game with three runs in the third and then scored three more in the fifth and four in the sixth to take a 12-2 lead. The Storm (18-16) got three back in the seventh, including two on a double down the line by senior 1B Josh Crout (Hamilton, Ohio).
Crout had two hits, as did freshman SS Sean Mathews (Washington, Mich./Warren De La Salle) – the first two of his college career. Junior OF Zach Mosbarger (Bellefontaine, Ohio/Bellefontaine) was on base twice and scored both times while senior OF Matt Toth (Lorain, Ohio/Admiral King) and junior 2B Matt Vanni (Willowick, Ohio/Benedictine) each drove in a run.
Ethan Santora and Jame Marinelli each had three hits to lead the Lakers while Ryan Seigel was one of three players with two hits and scored three times. Matt Adamczyk and Marinelli drove in three runs apiece to back starter Matthew Jimenez (4-0), who allowed two runs on nine hits in six innings. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.
Senior Michael Backes (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) suffered the loss, falling to 1-3. He allowed seven earned runs (eight total) on eight hits in five innings. He too struck out five but walked one. The final four members of the Storm relief corps did not allow a run in 31/3 innings.
The Storm returns to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play this weekend when they open a four-game series at Northwood University in Midland, Mich.
