CHILLICOTHE, OHIO – Trailing by a run with one out in the ninth, freshman outfield Aaron Lindgren (Willoughby, Ohio/South) lofted a fly ball to center field that seemingly would have brought home junior Zach Mosbarger (Bellefontaine, Ohio/Bellefontaine) with the tying run, but Derek Koch dropped the ball, allowing sophomore Garrett Emling (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) to come around from first base with the winning run – just beating the throw from the outfield – to give the third-seeded Lake Erie College baseball team a thrilling 3-2 win over fourth-seeded Tiffin University Wednesday night (May 9) in the first round of the 2012 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament at V.A. Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio.
An inning early, Koch had singled home the go-ahead run that put the Dragons (25-25) up 2-1 – just the fourth hit allowed by Storm (27-24) sophomore Brian Kilway (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) in what turned out to be a complete game gem for the LEC righthander.
But his miscue – and a heads up play by Emling – sent the Storm into the next round for a matchup with second-seeded Wayne State University on Thursday, May 10.
With one out in the ninth, junior Pat Kilway (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) singled to left and Mosbarger came in to pinch run. Emling followed with a single through the right side, sending Mosbarger to third. Jared Liette got two strikes on Lindgren to start the at-bat, but his third pitch was hit deep to center which would have easily scored Mosbarger. But after Koch couldn't corral the ball, Emling took advantage and beat the tag at the plate to send the Storm into celebration mode.

Prior to the ninth, the story of the game was the pitching duel between Kilway and Liette. Neither allowed a run through the first four innings before both teams broke through with a run in the fifth. The Dragons scored an unearned run after Kilway threw away a grounder by Kyle Robinson that put a runner on third to start the inning. Lake Erie followed in the bottom half with a bases-loaded single by sophomore Reid Rizzo (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle).
It stayed 1-1 until the eighth when Ryan Williams singled and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and wild pitch then came around to score on Koch's single up the middle.
Kilway (6-1) went a career-high nine innings for his fourth complete game of the season. He allowed just four hits and one earned run (two total) but did walk a career-high six batters. He struck out just one but battled to strand 11 Tiffin runners.
Liette (6-6) struck out seven in 8 1/3 innings. He allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits and walked a pair.
Senior Matt Toth (Lorain, Ohio/Admiral King) had two hits – a double and a triple – and was the only player with multiple hits in the contest.
Lake Erie will play Wayne State at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
