For the first time in the 13-year history of the program, Lake Erie has been selected as a contestant for the NCAA-II National Championship Tournament.
The NCAA announced the tournament's regional qualifiers on Sunday night. The NCAA-II playoff system provides for eight regional championships comprised of six teams each. The winners of those eight regions will then meet in the 2014 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship, to be held at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C., on May 24-31.
Enjoying the program's first 30-win season, the 31-20 Storm – runners-up of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference – will head to the in Evansville, Ind., as the No. 5 seed in the Midwest regional to be hosted by Southern Indiana University. The Midwest Region Tournament will be held May 15-18.
The seeds for the Midwest regional: No.1 – Southern Indiana (41-11), No. 2 – Grand Valley State (37-11), No. 3 – Drury (41-11), No. 4 – Wayne State (35-15), No. 5 – Lake Erie, No. 6 – Indianapolis (31-23). Lake Erie will meet a familiar foe in its first game of the tournament – the Storm will face the Grand Valley Lakers at 3 p.m. on day one.
