Storm Splits with Malone at Home

PAINESVILLE, Ohio—The Lake Erie College baseball team split their first double header against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe Malone University Sunday (March 29) in Painesville.

The Storm fell to the Pioneers 8-2 in game one before bouncing back with a 5-4 win in game two.


The Storm threatened in the bottom of the first, loading the bases, but the Pioneers held the Storm at bay.  The Pioneers offense came alive in the top of the second, plating four runs to take the lead.

With one out in the bottom of the second, Dylan Yankle (Columbus, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) singled up the middle.  Austin Bovenzi (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) singled to advance Yankle.  Nico DiIanni (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) singled to bring Yankle home and move Bovenzi to second.  Aaron Lindgren (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) double to right field, bringing Bovenzi home to cut the lead to two at the end of two.

The Pioneers outscored the Storm 4-0 in the final five innings of play to hold on for the win.

Lindgren and DiIanni had two hits and one RBI apiece.  Yankle and Bovenzi scored the Storm runs.

Russ Hogue (Belle Center, Ohio/Indian Lake) picked up the loss on the mound, giving up six run on seven hits.


The Pioneers struck first, hitting a solo homerun in the top of the second.

After the Pioneers added a run in the top of the third, the Storm got on the board.  Tyler Kmitt (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) earned a walk and moved to second on DiIanni's at-bat.  Lindgren brought a Kmitt home on a double to cut the lead in half.

In the bottom of the fourth, Cale Giddings (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North/Akron) reached on a fielder's choice.  He then advanced on a Louie Peterlin (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic) single.  Yankle hit a shot down the third base line, bringing Giddings home.  Kmitt cleared the bases with a two RBI double to give the Storm a 4-2 lead.

In the fifth, Lindgren singled and was brought home on a double by Zak DeCamp (Gahanna, Ohio/St. Francis De Sales) to give the Storm a three run advantage.

The Pioneers plated two runs in the top of sixth but Brandon Grunda (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) came in with two on to finish the inning without allowing another run. He picked up the save, going 3.2 innings, allowing one hit and no runs.

Peterlin and Yankle had two hits each to lead the Storm.  Kmitt had a team-high two RBI. 

Heath Kelley (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) picked up the win, going 5.1 innings, allowing four runs.

The Storm is back in action Monday (March 30) at Malone to finish the four game series.
