Storm Offense Comes Alive in Game Two at Malone

CANTON, Ohio— The Lake Erie College baseball team split a double header at Malone University Monday (March 30).

The Storm fell in game one 6-2 before bouncing back for a 12-4 win in game two.


The Storm got on the board in the top of the first inning.  Nico DiIanni (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) reached on an error to open the game.  Aaron Lindgren (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) got on base with a bunt, moving DiIanni to second.  Zak DeCamp (Gahanna, Ohio/St. Frances De Sales) singled to bring DiIanni home.  Sean Mathews (Washington, Mich./Warren De La Sale) followed DeCamp's RBI with one of his own on a bunt to give the Storm a 2-0 lead.

Neither team scored again until the third, when Malone plated five to pull ahead.  The Pioneers kept the Storm off the scoreboard the rest of the game while adding one more run to secure the win.

DeCamp led the Storm with two hits and a RBI.  Mathews had one hit and one RBI.  Lindgren and Louie Peterlin (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic) also had hits for the Storm.


DiIanni hit a lead-off single to right field in game two.  After he stole second, Mathews earned a walk.  Lucas Raley (Hinckley, Ohio/Media Highland) hit into an error to load the bases.  Lindgren hit a sac fly to center field to bring DiIanni home.  DeCamp hit into a fielder's choice, bringing Mathews across the plate and give the Storm a 2-0 lead.  However, the Pioneers scored three in the bottom of the frame to take the lead.

In the top of the second, Darren Sackett (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) singled and advanced to second on an error.  He came home when Austin Bovenzi (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) hit into an error, tying the game at three.

Peterlin led off the sixth with a walk.  Cale Giddings (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North/Akron) followed up with a single through the left side.  Sackett reached first on a bunt to load the bases.  Bovenizi then grounded out to first but brought Peterlin home to give the Storm the lead.   Mathew drove Giddings home with a single to left field to give the Storm a 5-3 lead.

The Storm plated two more runs in the seventh.  Raley reached on an error.  After he advanced on a wild pitch, Lindgren singled to move him to third.  Peterlin singled to center field, bringing Raley and Lindgren home.

In the eighth, the Storm bats came alive.  Alex Lind (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Elder) led-off with a single and advanced to second on a Mathews sac bunt.  DeCamp followed up a Raley single by bringing Lind home.  After Peterlin was walked, Giddings hit a single to the shortstop to bring Raley across the plate. A Sackett single brought Peterlin and DeCamp home.  Giddings reached home on a wild pitch, giving the Storm a 12-3 lead. 

Sackett led the Storm with three hits and a RBI.  Peterlin and Giddings had two hits and one RBI apiece. DeCamp had one hit and a pair of RBI. Mathews, DiIanni, Raley, Lindgren, Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg), Bovenzi and Lind had a hit apiece.  Mathews, Lindgren and Bovenzi also added a RBI. 

Brian Bullock (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) started the game for the Storm.  He went 5.0 innings, giving up three runs on five hits.  Michael Stryffeler (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) picked up the win, going one inning, allowing no hits and no runs. Brandon Grunda (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) recorded the save, going three innings, allowing one run on three hits.

The Storm is back in action Tuesday (March 31), playing host to Mercyhurst University.
