Storm Picks Up Two Wins at Walsh

CANTON, Ohio— The Lake Erie College baseball team picked up a two-game sweep at Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe Walsh University Monday (April 6).

The Storm won game one 2-1 in extra innings and game two 5-0.


The Storm got on the board first in the second inning.  Louie Peterlin (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic) led-off the inning with a walk.  Darren Sackett (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) singled to right, moving Peterlin to third.  After Tyler Kmitt (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) earned a walk, Jake Czismadia (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) reached on an error, scoring Peterlin.

The Cavaliers tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third. 

Neither team was able to cross the plate in the designated seven innings, sending the game into extra innings.

The Storm ended the six-inning scoring drought in the top of the ten.  Austin Bovenzi (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) reached on an error.  Aaron Lindgren (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby) moved Bovenzi to third on a single to right field.  Zak DeCamp (Gahanna, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) brought Bovenzi home to give the Storm a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the tenth, Brandon Grunda (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) kept the Cavaliers off the bases to seal the win.

Grunda picked up the win, going 3.2 innings, allowing just one hit. Russ Hogue (Belle Center, Ohio/Indian Lake) started the game for the Storm, going 6.1 innings allowing one earned run.

Peterlin, Cale Giddings (Pickerington, Ohio/North Pickerington/Akron), Sackett, Csizmadia, Lindgren and DeCamp had a hit apiece.  Bovenzi and Peterlin scored the Storm's runs.


With one out in the third, Lindgren hit a double through the left side.  With two outs, Peterlin hit an infield single, moving Lindgren to third.  After Peterlin moved to second on a pass ball, Rutger Luebke (Medina, Ohio/Medina) hit an infield single, scoring Lindgren.  Giddings and Kmitt, bringing Peterlin home and giving the Storm a 2-0 lead.

The Storm defense led by starting pitcher Brian Bullock (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) stifled the Walsh batters throughout the game.

In the seventh, the Storm's offense came alive.  DeCamp and Peterlin earned walks to lead-off the inning.  DeCamp ten made his way home on a throwing error to increase the lead to 3-0.  Luebke followed up DeCamp's run with a two-run homerun to widen the gap to five. 

Bullock closed out the game without allowing a baserunner in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win.

Lindgren, Peterlin, Luebke, Alex Lind (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Elder) and Derek Turocy (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) had two hits apiece for the Storm. Both of Lindgren's hits were doubles.  Luebke had a game-high three RBIs.  Kmitt also had a RBI.

Bullock went the distance for the Storm, giving up just three hits in the shutout.

The Storm is back in action Wednesday (April 8) at home against Ashland University.
