Storm Splits at Grand Valley

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—The Lake Erie College baseball team split a doubleheader at 17th-ranked Grand Valley State University Sunday (April 12) in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.

The Storm won game one 16-9 but fell in game two 6-4.


Trailing by one, the Storm bats came alive in the second inning, plating 13 runs.  Aaron Lindgren (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South), Louie Peterlin (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic), Rutger Luebke (Medina, Ohio/Medina), Cale Giddings (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North/Akron) and Alex Lind (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Elder) all came across the plate twice in the inning. Sean Mathews (Washington, Mich./Warren De La Sale), Zak DeCamp (Gahanna, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) and Ryan Carver (Orange Park, Fla./Oakleaf) also scored.  Lindgren, Peterlin, Giddings and Carver had two hits apiece in the inning.  Giddings and Carver each had three RBIs. 

The Lakers offense responded with six runs in the bottom of the frame.

In the fifth, Lindgren reached base with two outs.  Peterlin and Luebke hit back-to-back singles to score Lindgren and increase the lead to 14-7.

After Carver reached base in the sixth, Anthony Ortiz (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) pinch ran for him.  After advancing to third, Mathews singled to score Ortiz. 

After the Lakers scored in the bottom of the frame, the Storm added one more in the seventh.  Lindgren was walked to lead-off the inning.  Peterlin advanced him to second with a sac bunt.  A Luebke fly out took Lindgren to third.  Giddings singled to left field, bringing Lindgren home. 

In the bottom of the seventh, the Lakers scored one but it was not enough to overcome the Storm lead.

Giddings led the Storm with three hits- two of which were doubles- and four RBIs.  Lindgren, Peterlin and Carver also had three hits apiece.  Carver had three RBIs.  Mathews had a pair of hits while DeCamp, Luebke and Lind had one apiece.  In all, eight members of the Storm had a RBI.

Lindgren came across the plate four times for the Storm.  Giddings, Peterlin, Lubke and Lind scored twice.

Brandon Grunda picked up the win for the Storm.  Grunda gave up two runs and five hits over four innings while striking out three.


The Storm got on the board in the first inning.  DeCamp earned a walk and advanced when Peterlin was hit by a pitch.  Luebke singled down the right field line, bringing DeCamp home. 

In the fifth inning, Lindgren hit a solo homerun to increase the Storm lead to two. 

The Lakers answered with a two run homerun in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.

In the sixth, the Lakers plated four runs to take the lead. 

Austin Bovenzi (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) led-off with a double.  After a Cory Plavcan (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) moved Bovenzi to third on a single, Lindgren hit a sac fly to bring Bovenzi home.

The Storm added one more run in the ninth when Derek Turocy (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) scored on an error but it was not enough to overcome the Lakers lead.

Luebke led the Storm with two hits.  Plavcan, Lindgren and Bovenzi also had hits.  Lindgren had a pair of RBIs while Luebke had one. 

The Storm is back in action Wednesday (April 15) when they travel to Ashland University for a GLIAC doubleheader.
