PAINESVILLE, Ohio— The Lake Erie College baseball team opened a four-game series with Tiffin University Saturday (April 25) with a doubleheader.
The Dragons took game one 4-1 before bouncing back in game two for a 12-11 win.
The Dragons struck first, plating three in the top of the second. With no outs and runners on first and third, Sean Mathews (Washington, Mich./Warren De La Sale) caught a tough liner, threw to third for the second out and onto first for the triple play.
Trailing 4-0, the Storm loaded the bases in the sixth off three straight walks. Aaron Lindgren (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) brought Ryan Carver (Orange Park, Fla./Oakleaf) home on a sac fly to center for the Storm's first run.
Rutger Luebke (Medina, Ohio/Medina), Cale Giddings(Pickerington, Ohio/North Pickerington/Akron) and Darren Sackett (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) hit a trio of singles to lead off the seventh. However, the Storm was unable to produce, falling in game one.
Lindgren hit a double down the right field line in the first inning, and moved to third on a wild pitch. Lucas Raley (Hinckley, Ohio/Medina Highland) hit into an error, bringing Lindgren home. Louie Peterlin (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic) then singled through the right side, bringing Lindgren home.
After the Dragons scored, Lindgren and Raley hit back-to-back solo shots to increase the lead to 4-1 in the third.
The Dragons tied it up in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the frame, Giddings singled to bring Mathews home, who was walked to lead-off the inning, the regain the lead for the Storm.
With the score tied in the fifth, Lindgren was walked and eventually scored on an error to give the Storm a one run lead. Raley, who reached via error, also came across the plate on an error to give the Storm a 7-5 edge. After Peterlin and Mathews hit back-to-back singles, Luebke brought them home with a hard hit single through the left side.
The Dragons scored two in the eighth and one in the ninth to tie the game at nine and send it into extra innings.
After the game resumed, the Dragons plated two runs in the top of the 11th.
Darren Sackett (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) and Anthony Ortiz (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) led off the bottom of the frame with singles. Giddings followed up with a blooper to center to load the bases. Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) then hit a shot down the right field line, bringing all three in for the walk-off win.
Michael Stryffler (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) picked up the win on the mound.
