Storm's Comeback Falls Short at Gannon

ERIE, Pa.— The Lake Erie College baseball team's comeback at Gannon University fell short as the Storm dropped the nine-inning  game to the Golden Knights 11-7 Tuesday (March 15).

The Storm got to work right away, plating one in the top of the first.  Lucas Raley (Hinckley, Ohio/Medina Highland) hit a two-out single to left field, and stole second.  Zak DeCamp (Gahanna, Ohio/St. Francis De Sales) singled down the right field line, scoring Raley.

However, the Golden Knights matched the Storm's run in the bottom of the frame. They added 10 more between the third and fifth innings.

The Storm started to mount a comeback in the top of the seventh.  Jake Csizmadia (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) hit a pitch hit homerun to left field. Michael Poole (Kent, Ohio/Field) then doubled down the left field line and moved to third on a wild pitch.  He came across the plate on a Damian Maglione (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) ground out. Austin Bovenzi (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit), who reached first on the wild pitch, eventually scored on a Ryan Grieco (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) double.

In the top of the ninth, Bovenzi led off with a single.  After Maglione was walked, Grieco singled though the left side to load the bases.  Nico DiIanni (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) followed up with a single through the right side, scoring Bovenzi.  Tyler Bires (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst) hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Maglione to cut the lead to 11-6.

Cale Giddings (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North/Akron) loaded the bases once again in the ninth when he was hit by a pitch.  The next batter, Csizmadia, was walked, scoring Grieco.  However, the Storm grounded out on the at-bat as their comeback fell short.

Raley and Grieco had a pair of hits apiece while eight other batters had a hit.  Csizmadia had two RBI while DiIanni, Bires, DeCamp, Grieco and Bovenzi had one.  Maglione had a pair of runs.

David Lemasters (Cortland, Ohio/Lakeview) started the game on the mound for the Storm.  He went 4.0 innings, allowing one earned run with six strikeouts.  Jeremy Wei (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) was effective in relief, going two innings allowing no hits with two strikeouts.

The Storm is back in action this weekend, traveling to Davis & Elkins for a four-game series.
