Warriors Take Two From Storm

DETROIT- - The Lake Erie College baseball team lost a pair of close games at Wayne State University Sunday (April 17) in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.

The Warriors won game one 8-7 and game two 7-3. 


The Storm struck first in the second.  Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) earned a walk with one out.  Cale Giddings (Pickerington, Ohio/North Pickerington/Akron) followed up with a double to center field, bringing Birchmeier to third.  During the next at-bat, Birchmeier came home on a wild pitch.

The Storm added two more runs in the third.  Lucas Raley (Hinckley, Ohio/Medina Highland) tripled to right field with two outs.  After Louie Peterlin (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic) earned a walk, Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle) brought the two baserunners home with a double to right field, extending the Storm lead to 3-0.

The offense continued to produce in the fourth.  Giddings reached on a fielder's choice and worked his way to third before Tyler Bires (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst) was hit by a pitch, bringing Giddings home.

The Warriors got onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two to cut the lead to two. 

The Storm matched the Warriors pair of runs in the fifth.  After Williams earned a walk, Birchmeier singled to right field.  Giddings reached on a fielder's error, followed by a walk to Kody Bledsoe (Elyria, Ohio/Amherst Steele), loading the bases.  Dalton Davis (Hartville, Ohio/Uniontown Lake) singled to center field, scoring Giddings and Birchmeier.  During the next at-bat, the Warriors muffed a throw, which scored Bledsoe and gave the Storm a 7-2 lead. In the bottom of the frame, the Warriors scored one run.

The Storm kept the lead heading into the seventh inning but the Warriors rallied to tie the game at seven.  After an intentional walk to load the bases, the Warriors earned a walk to bring home the winning run.

Raley, Birchmeier and Giddings had two hits apiece.  Williams and Bledsoe had a pair of RBI while Birchmeier and Giddings each scored a pair of runs.

David Lemasters started on the mound for the Storm.  He surrendered three earned runs and eight hits while striking out five in six innings of work. 


 The Warriors got on the board first in game two, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second.  After a scoreless third, the Storm got on the board.

Peterlin hit a one-out double down the left field line.  Williams grounded out the next at-bat but moved Peterlin to third.  After Giddings earned a walk, Bledsoe singled through the left side, scoring Peterlin and cutting the lead to 2-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Warriors added two runs to increase their advantage to 4-1. 

The Storm offense got back to work in the eighth.  Raley reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a Williams single through the left side.  After both runners moved up on a passed ball, Bledsoe drove them home with single up the middle, cutting the lead to one.  However, the Warriors answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead up to 7-3.

Austin Bovenzi (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) got on base to lead off the ninth via error and moved to second on a wild pitch.  However, the Storm was unable to generate runs in the inning as the Warriors held on for the win.

Bledsoe led the Storm with two hits and three RBI.  Rees Rua (Amherst, Ohio/Amherst Steele) also had a pair of hits.  Peterlin, Williams and Raley scored the Storm's runs.

Russell Lamovec (Willoughby Hills, Ohio/Willoughby South) started on the mound for the Storm.  He gave up four earned runs in 5.2 innings of work with four strikeouts.

The Storm is back at home Wednesday (April 20) against Ashland University.
