Storm Earns Series Split with Tiffin

TIFFIN, Ohio—The Lake Erie College baseball team completed a four game series at Tiffin University with a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader Saturday (April 30).

The Storm won game one 2-0 but fell in game two 4-3.

The first game featured a great pitching duel.  Russell Lamovec (Willoughby Hills, Ohio/Willoughby South) started the game on the mound for the Storm.  He went the distance allowing just two hits striking out three.

The Storm scored the lone runs of the game in the top of the second.  Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle) reached first via error to lead off the inning, Cale Giddings (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central/Akron) followed up with a single to left field.   With two outs, Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) singled down the right field line, scoring Williams.  Austin Bovenzi (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) followed with a single to right field which scored Giddings.

Lamovec and the Storm defense were able to keep the Dragons off the board for the shutout.

The Dragons struck first, scoring two in the first.

The Storm got on the board in the fourth.  After Lucas Raley (Hinckley, Ohio/Medina Highland) led off with a double, Giddings doubled to left field, bringing Raley home.

In the top of the fifth, the Storm tied the game at two.  Alex Lind (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Elder) led off with a single.  After moving to second on a Damian Maglione (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) sacrifice and a wild pitch, Bovenzi brought him home with a hit.

The Dragons regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, plating one run.

The Storm tied the game once again in the eighth.  Bovenzi was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.  Williams moved Bovenzi to second on a sac bunt.  After Raley was intentionally walked, Rutger Luebke (Medina, Ohio/Medina) singled, brining Bovenzi home and tying the game at three.

After keeping the Dragons off the board in the eighth, the Storm got a runner on first to lead off the ninth. However, the Storm was unable to bring him home.

In the bottom of the ninth with two outs and a runner on third, the Dragons singled to left field to score the winning run.

Giddings had two hits and a RBI to lead the Storm.  Luebke and Bovenzi also drove in a run.

Connor Ryan (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) started on the mound for the Storm.  In five innings, he gave up three runs while striking out eight.  Matthew Fiorini (Schomberg, Ont./St. Maximilian Kolbe) pitched 3.2 innings of relief, giving up one run and two hits.

The Storm is back in action Wednesday (April 30) for the home finale against Walsh University.
