PAINESVILLE, Ohio— The Lake Erie College baseball team concluded the home portion of their 2016 schedule with a doubleheader against Walsh University Tuesday (May 3).
The Storm fell in game one 13-5 but bounced back for a 16-12 win in game two.
The Cavaliers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first.
Rees Rua (Amherst, Ohio/Amherst Steele) led off with a solo homerun to right field for the Storm, lowering the gap to four. With two outs, Cale Giddings (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North/Akron) hit a solo shot to left field to bring the game within three.
The Cavaliers added two more in the second to increase the led to five once again.
With two outs and Rua on in the third, Giddings went yard for the second time in the game, bringing the score to 7-4.
In the top of the sixth, the Cavaliers plated two runs to increase their lead to 9-5.
In the bottom of the sixth, Louie Peterlin (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic) hit a solo homerun to left center to bring the score within four.
The Cavaliers added four runs in the seventh and kept the Storm off the board in the bottom of the frame to hang on for the win.
Rua and Giddings had two hits apiece for the Storm. Giddings drove in a team-high three RBI. Peterlin and Rua also had a RBI.
Jeremy Wei (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) was effective in relief for the Storm. In four innings of action he gave up one earned run on two hits with four strikeouts.
After the Cavaliers scored one in the top of the first, the Storm bats went to work. Rua was walked to lead off the bottom of the first. Lucas Raley (Hinckley, Ohio/Medina Highland) was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Giddings then singled up the middle. The ball was misplayed by the centerfielder which brought Rua and Raley home and took Giddings all the way to third. Rutger Luebke (Medina, Ohio/Medina) followed up with a double down the left field line to bring Giddings home and give the Storm a 3-1 lead.
The Cavaliers cut the gap to one with a run in the third.
The Storm put up five runs in the fourth. Dalton Davis (Hartville, Ohio/Uniontown Lake) earned a walk, followed by back-to-back singles by Damian Maglione (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) and Rua. Austin Bovenzi (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) singled down the right field line, scoring Maglione and Davis. With Rua on third, Raley hit sac fly to left field to drive him home. After Giddings singled, Luebke earned walk to load the bases. Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle) singled up the middle, scoring Bovenzi and Giddings.
Bovenzi led off the sixth with double, hitting the right field wall. Raley brought him home with a double to left field at the next at-bat. The Storm offense continued to produce as Giddings hit a homerun to center field, his third homer of the day.
The Cavaliers mounted a comeback, scoring four in the eighth.
In the bottom of the frame, Raley hit a solo homerun to center, increasing the Storm lead to 12-8. Giddings and Luebke followed with back-to-back doubles to score the Storm's 13th run. Jake Csizmadia (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) came in to run for Luebke. Williams continued the rally with a single. Pinch hitting, Ryan Grieco (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) hit a single up the middle, scoring Csizmadia. Maglione doubled down the right field line, driving home Williams and Grieco.
The Cavaliers put up four runs in the top of the ninth but it was not enough to overcome the Storm's lead.
Giddings led the Storm offense, going five-for-five with four runs and three RBI. Maglione and Rua also had three hits apiece. Maglione also batted in two runs. Raley went two-of-three with three RBI and three runs. Bovenzi, Luebke and Williams had a pair of RBI each.
In total, the Storm produced 20 hits.
Ryan Lally (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) picked up the win on the mound. In seven innings, he gave up four runs while striking out seven.
The Storm heads on the road for a four-game series at Northwood University this weekend.
