Storm Splits Doubleheader at Northwood

MIDLAND, Mich.—The Lake Erie College baseball traveled to Northwood University for the first two games of their final Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) series Friday (May 6).

The Storm won game one 11-1 but fell in game two 17-7.


The Storm got on the board in the third.  Rees Rua (Amherst, Ohio/Amherst Steele) hit a one-out infield single, followed by Austin Bovenzi (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) earning a walk.  Lucas Raley (Hinckley, Ohio/Medina Highland) followed up with a double to right center, scoring Rua for the first run of the game.  Cale Giddings (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North/Alron) hit a sac fly, driving Bovenzi home for the Storm's second run.

In the fourth, the Storm increased their lead by one.  Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle) singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on an error.  With two outs, Kody Bledsoe (Elyria, Ohio/Amherst Steele) reached on an error which brought Williams home.

With one out in the fifth, Raley hit an infield single.  After Giddings earned a walk, Rutger Luebke (Medina, Ohio/Medina) hit an infield single to load the bases.  Williams hit a sac fly to right field which drove Raley home and extended the Storm's led to four.

The Storm offense continued to produce, scoring five in the sixth. Dalton Davis (Hartville, Ohio/Uniontown Lake) earned lead off walk.  After Bledsoe earned a walk, Rua was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  A wild pitch brought Davis home.  After Bovenzi earned a walk to load the bases, Raley hit a sac fly to drive Bledsoe home and move Rua to third.  After Giddings was walked, Luebke hit a single through the left side, scoring Rua and keeping the bases loaded.  Williams followed up with a two-RBI single to left field, scoring Giddings and Bovenzi.

The Timberwolves finally broke through in the sixth, scoring one run.

Rua led off the seventh with a double.  After Raley was walked, Giddings singled through the left side to load the bases.  Ryan Grieco (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) earned a walk which brought Rua home. Ryan Carver (Orange Park, Fla./Oakleaf) grounded out to the pitcher but it brought Raley home for the Storm's 11th run.

David Lemasters (Cortland, Ohio/Lakeview) went the distance for the Storm on the mound.  He pitched a gem, giving up just one run on four hits and three walks while striking out seven.

Raley led the Storm offense, going three-of-three with two RBI and two runs. Williams went two-of-three with three RBI and a run. Rua went two-of-four with three runs and a RBI.  Bovenzi had a pair of runs.


The Storm got to work right away in game two.  With Grieco and Raley on base via walks, Giddings hit a three run homerun to left field. 

The Timberwolves matched the Storm's three runs in the bottom of the frame.

The Storm regained the lead in the fourth.  Tyler Bires (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst) was hit by a pitch and stole second.  After moving to third on a Tyler Kmitt (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) single, Grieco brought him home.  However, the Timberwolves scored six in the bottom of the frame to take a 9-4 lead.

After the Timberwolves scored two in the sixth, the Storm answered with two in the seventh.  Raley was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a Giddings single.  With two outs, Wes Birchmeie (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) hit an infield single to score Raley.  Bires followed with a single to drive in Luebke, who reached on a fielder's choice.

The Timberwolves added six runs in the eighth to take a 17-6 into the final frame.  Giddings led off the ninth with a solo shot to left field.  However, the Storm was unable to overcome the deficit as the Timberwolves hung on for the win.

Giddings led the Storm, going three-of-four with four RBI and two runs. Luebke had a pair of hits and a run.  Raley also scored twice.

The Storm is back in action Saturday (May 7) to conclude the series.
