MIDLAND, Mich.- The Lake Erie College baseball team was swept by the Northwood University Timberwolves in a GLIAC doubleheader on Sunday (April 9) afternoon in Michigan.
The Storm fell 4-3 in the first game and 8-4 in the nightcap.
"We've played a lot of one run games this year and unfortunately have been on the wrong end of a lot of them," said Storm head coach Cameron Castro. "The good news is that eventually we will get to the point where those games start going our way. In the meantime we have to continue to trust what we're doing. How we're preparing, how hard we're playing and how we interpret failure. Losing a one run game is not failure. Yeah, it's a loss. But we didn't fail. Not if our goal is to play hard and leave it on the field. We did that today."
Northwood scored two runs in the third and one run in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead.
Lake Erie tied the game with three runs in the fifth. Zavin Orr (Cambridge, Ohio / Cambridge)was hit by a pitch and Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio / La Salle)walked to put two runners on base. Sam Browning (Cincinnati, Ohio / Archbishop McNicholas) tripled home two runs before coming home on a Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) sacrifice fly.
Northwood took game one with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, winning 4-3.
Austin Bovenzi (Fairport, N.Y. / McQuaid Jesuit) had two hits in the game as the Storm had seven hits in the first game.
Connor Ryan (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville) pitched a complete game with four runs allowed with five strikeouts.
"That's a good team right and we held tough today. Not so much yesterday but we made some good adjustments and Connor gave us a great chance to win the first one."
Lake Erie scored two runs in the first inning when the Storm loaded the bases. When the Storm loaded the bases with two singles and a walk, Rees Rua (Amherst, Ohio / Amherst Steele) singled home two runs.
Nathan Erzen (Brookpark, Ohio / Berea-Midpark) drilled a solo shot to left field as the Storm took a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
Northwood rallied for five runs in the third and three runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-3 lead.
The Storm got a run back in the fifth inning when Corbin Paxton (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) singled home Birchmeier, who walked. Lake Erie trimmed the lead to 8-4. Northwood swept the day with an 8-4 win in the nightcap.
Paxton was three-for-four in the game while Williams and Erzen had two hits each.
Nick Dejesus (Amherst, Ohio / Amherst Steele) threw three and two thirds innings of relief work with one hit allowed, two walks and three strikeouts. Brian Bullock (Loveland, Ohio / Loveland) added a perfect eighth inning out of the bullpen.
"It was the same thing with Nick in game two. Came out of the pen throwing strikes and was really good keeping them off balance."
The Storm will host Gannon University in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday (April 11) at 2:00 PM.
