PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College baseball team completed the current six-game homestand with a doubleheader with the Grand Valley State University Lakers on Saturday (April 15) afternoon.
The Storm took game one 7-4 but fell in the second game by a 16-7 score.
Sam Browning (Cincinnati, Ohio / Archbishop McNicholas) gave the Storm a 1-0 lead with a solo homerun to left center field in the bottom of the first. The Storm added a run in the bottom of the second with a run coming home on an error with the bases loaded.
In the fourth, Browning opened the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) singled Browning to third base before Rees Rua (Amherst, Ohio / Amherst Steele) singled home Browning. Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio / La Salle) cleared Birchmeier and Rua with a three-run homerun to left center field. Lake Erie led 7-0 after four innings.
Grand Valley trimmed the lead to three with four runs scored in the fifth inning. Lake Erie won the opener 7-4 over the Lakers.
Browning, Birchmeier, Williams and Paxton all had two hits in the game. Browning scored two runs and Williams drove in three runs.
Connor Ryan (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville) pitched five innings with four runs allowed for his second win of the year. Christopher Mutter (Cleves, Ohio / Taylor) and Ryan Middendorf (West Chester, Ohio / Lakota East) ended the game with two innings of shutout ball.
Grand Valley State scored one run in the 2nd and two in the third, opening a 3-0 lead. Lake Erie responded with a run in the bottom of the third on a double play.
In the fourth, the Lakers scored two runs until the Storm tied it up in the bottom half of the inning. The Storm loaded the bases with two singles and a walk. Lind brought home one run with a sacrifice fly. Nathan Erzen (Brookpark, Ohio / Berea-Midpark) cleared the bases with a three-run shot to left field.
The Lakers scored four in the sixth inning, taking a 9-5 lead. Lake Erie had a quick response as they cut the lead in half in the bottom half. The Storm loaded the bases with three singles. Erzen walked one run home and Austin Bovenzi (Fairport, N.Y. / McQuaid Jesuit) was hit by a pitch, scoring another run.
Grand Valley State added four runs in the eighth inning and two in the ninth for a 16-7 win.
Paxton and Rua each had two hits. Williams, Paxton and Erzen each scored two runs and Erzen plated four runs.
The Storm will return to the diamond at Mercyhurst on Tuesday (April 18) afternoon for a nine-inning game.
