TIFFIN, Ohio- The Lake Erie College Storm baseball team fell to the Tiffin University Dragons on Tuesday (April 18) afternoon in a GLIAC doubleheader.
The Dragons took game one 9-3 and the nightcap 14-9 in a shortened, eight-inning game.
Tiffin scored two runs in the first and second innings, taking a 4-0 lead over the Storm.
Sam Browning (Cincinnati, Ohio / Archbishop McNicholas) launched his seventh homerun of the year, a solo blast to left center in the second. Lake Erie cut the lead to 4-1.
The Dragons answered back with a run in the fifth inning, before Lake Erie got their second homerun for the game in the sixth. Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) hit a solo homerun to left field as the Storm slimmed the margin to 5-2.
Tiffin put four runs on the board in the sixth inning, opening a 9-2 lead.
Ryan Carver (Orange Park, Fla. / Oakleaf) opened the seventh inning with a double and came around to score on a RBI double by Browning. The Storm fell 9-3 in the first game.
Browning finished with two hits, two runs batted in and one run scored in the opener.
Tiffin began the scoring with four runs in the first inning. Lake Erie scored three runs in the second inning to close the deficit to one run. The Storm got two singles and a walk to open the frame. Browning singled home a run before a Tiffin error plated two more runs.
The Dragons regained a 7-3 lead with a three-run third inning. Lake Erie followed with their second three-run frame in the fourth. Alex Lind (Cincinnati, Ohio / Cincinnati Elder) led off the inning with a solo homerun to left field. Birchmeier singled home two runs later in the frame, cutting the Dragons lead to 7-6.
Tiffin plated four runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning as the Dragons led 11-6.
In the fifth inning, Lake Erie brought home three more runs. Lind doubled with one out and came home on an error by the Dragons. With the bases loaded, Corbin Paxton (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) plated a run with a hit by pitch. A balk scored the third run of the inning.
The Dragons scored three runs in the sixth inning, capping the scoring at 14-9. The game was called in the eighth inning due to darkness.
The Storm had 15 hits in the second game, including three hits from Lind and Brady Minetti (Mckees Rocks, Pa. / Montour). Jacob Armstrong (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston), Paxton and Birchmeier all had two hits each. Browning and Lind scored three runs each.
The Storm will travel to face #2 Mercyhurst on Wednesday (April 19) at 2:00 PM.
