Storm Splits Day With California (Pa.)

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College baseball team hosted the California University of Pennsylvania Vulcans on Wednesday (April 26) afternoon at Braggs Field.

The Storm took game one in a 17-11 slugfest and dropped the nightcap by a final score of 9-6.


California (Pa.) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two runs in the first inning.

The Storm answered back with five in the bottom half of the first. The first three batters reached with singles in the inning. With the bases loaded, two runs scored on a fielding error. Caleb Waller (Vermilion, Ohio / Vermilion) singled home a run before Alex Lind (Cincinnati, Ohio / Cincinnati Elder) brought two runners home with a two-run single.

The Vulcans regained the lead with four runs in the second.

Lake Erie responded with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Corbin Paxton (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) and Austin Bovenzi (Fairport, N.Y. / McQuaid Jesuit) reached with a single and double, respectively. Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) singled home a pair. After another single and a fly out, Waller brought Birchmeier home with a sacrifice fly. Lake Erie led 8-6 after two innings.

California (Pa.) scored one run in the third as the Storm got one in the bottom half off of an error by the Vulcans.

With the Storm leading 9-7, the Vulcans tied the game at nine with two runs in the fifth. A bases loaded with Ryan Carver (Orange Park, Fla. / Oakleaf) at the plate broke the tie in favor of the Storm 10-9.

The Vulcans tied the game once again with a run in the fifth inning. A seven-run fifth inning broke the game open for the Storm. Rees Rua (Amherst, Ohio / Amherst Steele) walked with the bases loaded and a run scored on a wild pitch before Waller doubled home a run. Carver singled home two runners and then Jacob Armstrong (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston) hit his first homerun of the year. Armstrong's two-run blast made it 17-10 Storm.

California (Pa.) scratched a run across in the seventh inning but the Storm took game one 17-11.

Birchmeier had three hits as seven different players had multi-hit games. Paxton, Bovenzi and Birchmeier all scored three runs each.


Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio / La Salle) blooped home a run in the bottom of the first inning with the bases loaded, giving the Storm a 1-0 lead.

The Storm added four runs in the second for a 5-0 lead. Birchmeier singled home a run before Waller doubled home a pair. Waller stole home on a delayed double steal for the Storm's fourth run of the inning.

California (Pa.) scored five runs in the third and two runs in the fourth as they took a 7-5 lead.

Sam Browning (Cincinnati, Ohio / Archbishop McNicholas) delivered his eighth homerun of the season, a solo shot to center field in the fourth. The Storm cut the lead to 7-6.

The Vulcans added two runs in the top of the sixth for the final score of 9-6.

Birchmeier had three hits in game two and six hits for the day. Waller, Brady Minetti (Mckees Rocks, Pa. / Montour) and Armstrong all had two hits in the nightcap.

The Storm will return to action on Saturday (April 29) as they host Ashland University in a GLIAC doubleheader.
