Storm Swept by Eagles on Road

ASHLAND, Ohio- The Lake Erie College baseball team completed the split series with the Ashland University Eagles on Sunday (April 30) afternoon at Donges Field.

The Eagles swept the doubleheader with a 10-4 win in game one and a 16-7 win in the second game.


Lake Erie struck first in the first inning with a run. Sam Browning (Cincinnati, Ohio / Archbishop McNicholas) lined a one-out double to right-center field. Browning moved to third on a flyout and scored on a RBI single by Rees Rua (Amherst, Ohio / Amherst Steele).

Ashland took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the first inning before the Storm rallied with two runs in the top of the second. The Storm put runners on the corners with two outs via a walk, single and fielder's choice. Browning singled home a run and then Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) followed with a RBI double.

The Eagles scored three in the fourth and two in the fifth for a 7-3 lead.

Lake Erie loaded the bases with two singles and an error. Birchmeier plated a run with a fielder's choice as the Storm cut the lead to 7-4 in the sixth inning.

Ashland finished the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the sixth as they won the opener 10-4.

Browning had three hits while Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio / La Salle) had two hits. Birchmeier drove in two runs and Nathan Erzen (Brookpark, Ohio / Berea-Midpark) scored two runs.


Rua began the scoring for the Storm in game two with a RBI single in the first inning again. Rua singled home Birchmeier, who doubled a batter prior. Ashland answered back and tied the game at one after one inning.

In the third, Lake Erie took back the lead with a run. Corbin Paxton (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) led off the inning with a single and came all the way around to score on a RBI triple by Browning.

A five-run fourth inning for the Eagles lifted Ashland to a 6-2 lead.

Lake Erie tied the ballgame with a four-run sixth inning with two key hits. Birchmeier and Rua started the rally with a walk and single, respectively. Williams plated Birchmeier with a RBI double to left center. Caleb Waller (Vermilion, Ohio / Vermilion) cleared the bases with a three-run homerun to right field.

Ashland bounced back in the bottom of the sixth with three runs.

Browning tripled in the seventh inning and came across the plate on a Birchmeier RBI single as the Storm slimmed the deficit to 9-7.

The Eagles added seven runs in the final two innings as they swept the doubleheader with a 16-7 win in the nightcap.

Browning and Williams each had three hits in the second game. Birchmeier and Rua each had two hits as the Storm totaled 14 hits in the game.

The Storm will travel to Clarion for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday (May 2) afternoon.
