Baseball's Late Rally Falls Short

HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Lake Erie College baseball team concluded a three game series with the Lincoln Memorial University Railsplitters with a single nine inning game on Monday (Feb. 19) afternoon.

The Storm was defeated in the series finale, 10-6.

Lincoln Memorial jumped out to a 6-0 lead with five runs in the first inning and one run in the second.

The Storm cut the lead to 6-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio / La Salle) started the inning with a single to center field. Following a strikeout, Trace Peterson (Medina, Ohio / Medina) scored Williams with a RBI double to right center field. A groundout moved Peterson ninety feet closer and then he scored on a wild pitch.

The Railsplitters added three runs in the sixth inning for a 9-2 lead.

Peterson launched a one-out solo homerun to left center field in the top of the seventh inning, trimming the lead to 9-3 at the seventh inning stretch.

Lincoln Memorial answered with a single run in the bottom of the seventh, making it 10-3.

Lake Erie started a rally in the eighth inning with two consecutive singles. A double play wiped one runner out but Rees Rua (Amherst, Ohio / Amherst Steele) followed with a RBI double down the right field line, scoring Corbin Paxton (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) from third.

The Storm rallied in the top of the ninth inning but the rally fell short. The first two batters of the game singled before a double play put a runner at third base. Forrest Longeway (Cincinnati, Ohio / Walnut Hills) walked and stole second before Paxton walked to load the bases. Brady Minetti (Mckees Rocks, Pa. / Montour) and Nathan Birtley (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) each plated a run with a RBI single. The Storm brought the tying run to the plate but the Railsplitters escaped the bases loaded jam.

Peterson led the Storm with three hits (two extra base hits), two runs and two runs batted in. Minetti and Caleb Waller (Vermilion, Ohio / Vermilion) each had two hits apiece.

Christopher Mutter (Cleves, Ohio / Taylor) threw a scoreless eighth inning with three strikeouts.

The Storm will travel to Williamstown, North Carolina for a three game series with Millersville starting on Saturday (Feb. 24).
