Big Innings Lift Storm Over Mountain Lions

ATHENS, W. Va. – The Lake Erie College baseball team opened a series with the Concord University Mountain Lions on Friday (March 9) afternoon. The Storm used two big innings to win the opener 9-5.

Concord opened the game with a run in the bottom of the first inning for a 1-0 early lead.

Lake Erie tied the game in the top of the second. Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio / La Salle) and Ryan Carver (Orange Park, Fla. / Oakleaf) began the inning with back-to-back singles. Caleb Waller (Vermilion, Ohio / Vermilion) moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Williams crossed the plate on a wild pitch as Lake Erie tied the game at one.

A five-run third inning gave the Storm a 6-1 advantage. Trace Peterson (Medina, Ohio / Medina) was hit by a pitch before Concord made a pitching change. Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) walked and Williams singled two batters later, loading the bases. Carver lined a two-run single to left center, scoring Peterson and Birchmeier. After a flyout, Nathan Erzen (Brookpark, Ohio / Berea-Midpark) walked to load the bases for a second time in the inning. Blake Curry (Eaton, Ohio / Eaton) walked home a run before Forrest Longeway (Cincinnati, Ohio / Walnut Hills) drove in two runs with a single to right field.

The Mountain Lions scored a run in the fourth and seventh innings, closing the gap to 6-3.

Lake Erie added three more runs in the top of the eighth inning for a 9-3 lead. Peterson and Birchmeier each singled to center field. Corbin Paxton (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) singled, bringing Peterson home. An error by the centerfielder moved Paxton to third while Birchmeier scored from first. Williams sealed the inning with a RBI single, scoring Paxton.

Concord scored a pair of runs in the eighth inning but the Storm won the game 9-5.

Williams had three hits and two runs scored. Carver and Longeway each had two hits and two RBI in the contest. Peterson and Birchmeier both had two hits and two runs scored.

David Lemasters (Cortland, Ohio / Lakeview) pitched five innings of two-run ball in his third start of the year. He allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits. He walked two and struck out ten batters. Evan Layne (Brooklyn. N.Y. / Telecommunications) allowed one run in two innings out of the bullpen. Brad Curry (Eaton, Ohio / Eaton) worked around a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to pitch a scoreless inning.

The Storm and the Mountain Lions will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Saturday (March 10), starting at 12:00 PM.
