MASON, Ohio – The Lake Erie College baseball team split their Great Midwest doubleheader against the Cedarville University Yellow Jackets on Friday (March 16) afternoon at Prasco Park.
Lake Erie scored three runs in the fourth inning for a 4-3 win in the opener. In the second game, Cedarville scored three runs in the first inning and won the nightcap 6-2.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as they scored in the top of the first inning.
After a scoreless second and third inning, the Storm took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) got the inning started with a single up the middle, and the next batter, Rees Rua (Amherst, Ohio / Amherst Steele) doubled to advance Birchmeier to third. Caleb Waller (Vermilion, Ohio / Vermilion) grounded out to short, but Birchmeier scored on the play. The next batter up, Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio / La Salle) tripled to centerfield and plated Rua. The final run of the inning came across as Nathan Erzen (Brookpark, Ohio / Berea-Midpark) reached on an error and plated Williams.
Cedarville responded with a run in the top of the fifth and cut the Storm lead to 3-2.
Lake Erie answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth when Rua lead off the inning with a walk. He later scored when Williams reached on an error to give the Storm a 4-2 edge.
After a scoreless seventh inning, the Yellow Jackets cut the Storm lead to 4-3 in the top of the eighth. Lake Erie held on for the 4-3 win.
Williams and Birchmeier each had two hits while five different players had a hit. Rua scored two of the four runs scored in the game.
David Lemasters (Cortland, Ohio / Lakeview) started game one for the Storm and pitched seven strong innings. He allowed two runs on three hits, and struck out nine to earn his second win of the year. Chris Mutter (Cleves, Ohio / Taylor) pitched one inning out of the bullpen and earned his second save of the season.
Cedarville opened the second game with a three-run first inning.
Lake Erie pulled within one in the second inning. Waller walked with one out in the frame before Ryan Carver (Orange Park, Fla. / Oakleaf) doubled him home. Williams followed with a RBI single of his own as the Storm trailed 3-2.
The Yellow Jackets added a run in the third, sixth and seventh innings for a 6-2 victory in game two.
Carver and Williams had two hits each to lead the offense in game two.
Peter Theodos (St. Albans, W. Va. / St. Albans) pitched three scoreless innings in relief with two strikeouts.
The Storm are scheduled to host Gannon on Wednesday (March 21) at Classic Park.
