EASTLAKE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College baseball team was in action today as they defeated the 16th ranked Ohio Dominican University Panthers, 11-6.
The Panthers scratched across a run in the top of the first, to grab a 1-0 edge. The Storm answered in the bottom of the first inning when Corbin Paxton (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) walked and advanced to second on a balk. Paxton came around to score on a dropped third strike as Trace Peterson (Medina, Ohio / Medina) reached first on the play. Later in the inning, a Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio / La Salle) walk loaded the bases and a Rees Rua (Amherst, Ohio / Amherst Steele) single plated Peterson and Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg), to give Lake Erie a 3-1 edge. The Storm added to their lead in the bottom of the second inning when Peterson hit a sacrifice fly to plate Paxton who singled earlier in the inning. Lake Erie tacked on a run in the third as Samuel Browning (Cincinnati, Ohio / Archbishop McNicholas) led off the inning with a walk. The next batter, Caleb Waller (Vermilion, Ohio / Vermilion) singled and a throwing error allowed Browning to score. The Storm offense continued to hit as Ryan Carver (Orange Park, Fla. / Oakleaf) walked to lead off the inning and Peterson reached on an error. The next batter up, Birchmeier tripled to the left centerfield gap and drove in both Carver and Peterson to give Lake Erie a 7-1 edge. Later in the inning, Birchmeier stole home, and later in the inning a Waller single plated Browning, who doubled earlier in the inning. The Storm made the score 10-1 in the fifth when Rua singled and drove in Birchmeier, who walked to start the inning. Ohio Dominican scored a run in the top of the sixth to cut the Storm lead to 10-2. The Storm responded in the bottom of the sixth when Peterson reached on a fielder's choice to scored Waller, and give the Storm an 11-2 edge. After a scoreless seventh inning, the Panthers tacked on three in the eighth and one run in the ninth, but the Storm won, 11-6.
Birchmeier had three hits, three runs and two RBI. Rua, Browning and Waller each had two hits as the Storm totaled 12 hits.
Michael Stryffeler (Sagamore Hills, Ohio / Padua Franciscan) pitched six strong innings with two runs allowed (one earned). He scattered two singles and three walks with eight strikeouts.
Lake Erie will return to the diamond on Friday (April 13) when they travel to take on Walsh, with the doubleheader set to start at 1:30 p.m.
