Baseball Falls in DH at Findlay

FINDLAY, Ohio – The Lake Erie College baseball faced the University of Findlay Oilers in a Great Midwest doubleheader on Saturday (April 21) afternoon at Fifth Third Field.

Lake Erie fell in game one 2-0 and 4-3 in nine innings for the nightcap.


Findlay scored first in the fourth inning on a balk and added a second run in the seventh inning. The two runs held up in a 2-0 win in the opener.

Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio / La Salle) had two hits for the Storm.

David Lemasters (Cortland, Ohio / Lakeview) was the tough luck loser as he pitched seven innings with two unearned runs. He scattered three singles and one walk along with eight strikeouts. Chris Mutter (Cleves, Ohio / Taylor) pitched a scoreless eighth inning.


The Oilers gained a 1-0 lead in the second inning before the Storm tied the game in the top of the third. Nathan Birtley (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) singled with one out and moved to second base on a groundout. Corbin Paxton (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) plated Birtley with a RBI single to right center field.

Lake Erie took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning. Paxton opened the frame with a single to right field. He moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt and went to third on a wild pitch. Williams brought Paxton home with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Williams struck again in the seventh inning as he pushed the lead to 3-1. Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) walked and stole second base. He scored from second base as he was driven in by a Williams RBI single.

The Oilers tied the game at three in the bottom of the seventh inning. Findlay won the game 4-3 with a walkoff hit by pitch in the ninth inning.

Paxton had two of the Storm's six hits in the second game.

Evan Layne (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Telecommunications) allowed three runs in six and two third innings. He allowed six hits, three walks and three strikeouts.

The Storm will conclude the three game series with Findlay on Sunday (April 22) at 1:00 PM.
