PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College baseball team will conclude the 2018 regular season with a home-and-home series with the Malone University Pioneers this weekend. The Storm will play a doubleheader at Malone on Saturday (May 5), starting at 1:00 PM. The series will shift to Eastlake for the series finale and Senior Day at Classic Park. The regular season finale will begin at 6:00 PM on Sunday (May 6).
Storm Report: Lake Erie is 16-25-1 overall and 13-11 in the G-MAC with three games to go in the regular season. Lake Erie is one game behind Walsh for the second wild card berth into the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament. Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) homered and played all nine positions in the Storm's 14-1 loss to Gannon on Wednesday (May 2). Birchmeier leads the team with 47 hits, ten doubles, three triples and 29 RBI. Trace Peterson has the Storm's best batting average at .324 along with the most runs scored (34) and eight home runs. David Lemasters (Cortland, Ohio / Lakeview) leads the pitching staff with a 2.67 ERA and 67 strikeouts.
Opposition Position: Malone is 30-15 overall and 16-8 in the G-MAC this season. The Pioneers took two out of three games from Findlay last weekend. Turner Hill leads the Pioneers with a .356 batting average and 47 hits.
Series History: Lake Erie is 7-11 overall against the Pioneers in the series. Malone won three of the four games during the 2016 season, the last time the programs met.
Storm Forecast: Pending the results of this weekend, the Storm could be playing in the Great Midwest Tournament next weekend at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio.
