Baseball Scores 19 In UINDY Split

INDIANAPOLIS- The Lake Erie College baseball team split with the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds this afternoon with a 7-9 loss and a 12-11 win that went into extra innings.

Although Lake Erie went up to an early 3-0 lead by the top of the fourth inning, the Greyhounds scored nine in the fifth and sixth innings to take a commanding lead to secure them the win. Senior Ryan Lally gave up three home runs while also earning three strikeouts in four innings of work and earning his second loss of the year. Freshman Wyatt Smith pitched in relief.

In the second game, UIndy went up by two in the bottom of the first, but the Storm raged back, and took a 10-4 lead by the top of the sixth inning. UIndy tied it in the bottom of the seventh with a score of 10-10, pushing the game to extras.

Nathan Erzen started the Storm off in the top of the eighth inning with a walk, and he would eventually score on an error by the Greyhound defense for the go-ahead run. The Greyhounds scrapped, and scored a run in the bottom half of the inning though, and the game went to nine.

Storm speedster Brandon Szopo reached on a single in the top of the ninth inning, and a bunt single by sophomore Nathan Birtley moved Szopo to third. Then, Szopo scored on a groundout hit by Brady Minetti for another go-ahead run that the Greyhounds didn't take back.

Senior Peter Theodos earned his first win of the 2019 year with the start in the second game. Coming into pitch in relief afterward included Tristan Mayer, Brad Curry, Sam Browning, and Chris Mutter.

The split puts the Storm at 16-20 heading into a road G-MAC series this weekend with the University of Findlay.
