Storm Players Selected to All-Independent Team

PAINESVILLE, Ohio (November 28, 2008) - The first announcement of only a handful of awards Lake Erie College players are eligible to receive after its first season of varsity football at the NCAA Division II provisional level has been made and a total of six Storm athletes have been recognized. The All-Independent Team was announced with two first-team honors, three second-team honors and one third-team honor going to Lake Erie players.

Junior Tony Howard (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield Heights) was a top pick at running back and sophomore Bill Finucan (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) was the top choice at line backer.

Freshman quarterback Sean Bedevelsky (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick), freshman wide receiver Brandon James (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and freshman defensive back Ryan Studer (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) were second-team selections and freshman line backer Scott Given (Elyria, Ohio/Midview) was a third-team honoree.

A total of 81 players from the nation's Division II independent schools were honored - 27 per first, second or third team.

Howard was the Storm's leading rusher this season, compiling 795 yards in 10 games on 147 carries for an average of 5.4 yards per carry and 79.5 yards per game. He scored eight touchdowns, including the team's historical first TD in program history.

Finucan recorded more tackles (89), sacks (5) fumble recoveries (3) and takles for a loss than any other Storm player. The team co-captain was also instrumental in keeping the young program focused throughout the season.

Bedevelsky started all 11 games this season, going 180-for-323 with 12 interceptions and 22 touchdowns. He totaled 2,417 yards for an average of 219.7 per game.

James was the team's top receiver with 723 yards on 56 receptions. He totaled eight touchdowns and averaged 12.9 yards per reception and 65.7 yards per game.

Studer and Given were two of the team's other top defensive players this season, with Studer recording the third highest amount of tackles with 78. He also had two interceptions, one touchdown and one fumble recovery. Given was the team's second-leading tackler with 81. He had two sacks and one fumble recovery.
