Football Season Kicks Off Thursday Night at Gannon

PAINESVILLE, OHIO - Lake Erie College begins its second season of varsity football - and first as an active member of NCAA Division II - on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009 at Gannon University.   Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Gannon University Field in Erie, Pa.
The Storm, which finished 3-8 in its inaugural campaign, will look to avenge a loss to Gannon in last year's season-opener.  The Golden Knights (4-7 in 2008) held on for a 24-22 victory on Aug. 28, 2009 in the first game in Lake Erie history.

THE SERIES: Gannon leads 1-0 after winning last year's contest in Painesville, Ohio.  This will be the first meeting in Erie, Pa.

THE BROADCAST: The game will be streamed live on as part of the Lake Erie Football Network with veteran sports announcer Scott Wludyga handling the play-by-play.

THE COACHES: Mark McNellie (Baldwin-Wallace '88) is in his third season at Lake Erie, guiding the program since its inception as a club sport in 2007.  Prior to being named head coach at Lake Erie on Aug. 9, 2006, McNellie was an assistant coach at Mercyhurst College for 17 years.
Jim Kiernan (Lawrence '90) is in his third season as the fourth coach in Gannon history.  He is 5-17 overall with the Golden Knights.
