PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College Storm football team defeated Walsh University today (September 20th), 47-36.
Walsh University took the opening possession of the game for the game opening touchdown. Walsh scored on a 23 yard touchdown pass from Brody Tonn to Jerald Robinson who pulled it in with one hand.
The Storm answered with a touchdown of their own when Michael Hokavar (Perry, Ohio / Perry) completed a 58 yard pass to receiver Tommy Jackson (Hubbard, Ohio / Hubbard). This made the score 7-7 with 9:35 left to play in the first quarter.
The Cavaliers continued the offense tread when they drove 67 yards and it was capped off by a Justin Keith four yard touchdown rush.
Lake Erie College went a long drive of their own that covered 73 yards. The drive was capped off when running back Anthony Bilal (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside) went on a 34 yard scamper to make level at 14-14.
Both teams were evenly matched in the first quarter as Walsh had 152 total yards and eight first downs. Lake Erie had 142 total yards and six first downs at the end of the first.
The Storm defense came up with a stop to start the second quarter, and the offense capitalized and took its first lead of the game. The offense turned the defensive stop into a 12 play 95 yard drive. The drive was capped off by a four yard touchdown by Bilal, giving him two on the night. The storm botched the extra point and the score is 20-14 in favor of the Storm.
Late in the second quarter Walsh had the ball inside the Storm 10 yard line. The Storm defense came up but when they made a fourth down stop to keep Walsh out of the end zone, and keeping the score 20-14 in favor of the Storm. Both teams ran 32 plays in the first half with the Lake Erie gaining a total of 259 yards. Lake Erie out gained Walsh by 31 yards in the first half.
Lake Erie opened second half with a nine play 72 yard drive that was finished off by a five yard touchdown rush by Anthony Bilal, making the score 27-14.
The Cavaliers scored with 8:11 to play in the third quarter to make the score 27-21 in favor of Lake Erie College. Walsh scored on a 23 yard touchdown pass from Tonn to Luke Lloyd. This was Tonn's second touchdown toss of the evening.
Bilal crossed the goal line for a fourth time on the evening on a 46 yard touchdown run. He has 124 rushing yards on 13 carries, for an average of 9.5 yard per carry. The extra point was block by Walsh and at the 7:15 mark in the third quarter the Storm led 33-21.
The Storm defense forced fumbled that went out of bounds at the 28 yard line giving the ball to the Storm offense with three minutes in the third quarter. Off the turnover the Storm was set up by a running back Brandon Phoenix (Toledo, Ohio / Maumee) rush for 51 yards that took the Storm to the 34 yard line of the Cavaliers. The drive that started with the forced fumble was capped off by a one yard Bilal touchdown rush, giving him five on the night. With this carry he set the Lake Erie College record for touchdown rushes in a game.
Tonn tossed his third touchdown of the game to Aaron Male who hauled in the 16 yard pass to make the score, 40-28 Lake Erie.
Bilal scored his six touchdown of the night on a 43 yard scamper that gave him 171 rushing yards in the game with eight minutes remaining. This gave the Storm a 19 point advantage, 47-28.
With five minutes left in the fourth quarter, sophomore defensive back Tony Andrews intercepted a pass from Tonn.
Walsh had a four play 63 yard touchdown drive that was set up by a 39 yard pass from Tonn to Anthony Chrock. Tonn finished off the drive with 16 yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Willison, to make the score 47-36 with a 1:34 seconds left in the game.
The Storm will be back in action when they travel to Allendale, Mich. to take on Grand Valley St. on Saturday (September 27th) at 7 P.M.
