Seven Named All-GLIAC Honorable Mention

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College football team had seven members be honored by the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) for their efforts during the 2016 season.

Seven members, four offensive and three defensive players, were named to the All-GLIAC Honorable Mention Team, announced by the GLIAC on November 15th.

Seniors Anthony Kukwa (Perry, Ohio / Perry / Ball State) and Ryan Bedard (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville) join freshmen Josh Durst (Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South) and LunDerek Craig (Stockbridge, Ga. / Eagles Landing) as the offensive members.

Kukwa completed his senior season with the Storm, earning his second straight All-GLIAC Honorable Mention honor. Kukwa played in ten games, catching 22 passes for a total of 197 yards with two touchdowns. He also had 55 rushing yards during the season. As a special teams player, Kukwa also made ten tackles.

Coach Hazzard's Take: "Played almost every skill position on the offense, great blocker, route runner, and outstanding special teams' player."

Bedard appeared in eight games for his senior season, starting in five of them. Bedard fought through some injuries during his final season with the Storm.

Coach Hazzard's Take: "Battle tested veteran, played through some injuries and was a tremendous leader for us." 

Durst started all eleven games on the offensive line as a true freshman. Durst was a key piece on the offensive front that suffered a lot of injuries over the year.

Coach Hazzard's Take: "Played very well for a true freshman, possesses great feet and technique.  He will only get better."

Craig was nominated for an Honorable Mention honor by the league's coaches. Craig suffered a season-ending injury versus Ferris State and is currently recovering. Craig, a true freshman, made 26 rush attempts in seven games played.

Coach Hazzard's Take: "Very excited that he earned this honor.  He is an inspiration to his teammates and the program."

Seniors Maurice Hale (Columbus, Ohio / Beechcroft) and Zach Jude (Canal Winchester, Ohio / Bloom Carroll) along with junior Nick Kirschner (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) were named All-GLIAC Honorable Mention on the defense side.

Hale finished his senior campaign with a total of 77 tackles, good for second on the team. Hale led the defense with 46 solo tackles, combined with 31 assisted tackles. He had one tackle for loss during the season. Hale had a season-high 12 tackles against Findlay this year.

Coach Hazzard's Take: "Great leader and tackler in our secondary, makes all the calls for us and is very productive."

Jude led the Storm defense with 90 total tackles this season. The senior had 45 solo tackles and 45 assisted tackles on defense. He set a career-high 19 tackles against Findlay. Jude accumulated half of a sack, one fumble recovery, two forced fumbles and two interceptions.

Coach Hazzard's Take: "Leading tackler, played extremely physical for us on the inside."

Kirschner, a junior, finished third on the team with 55 total tackles. He made 25 solo and 30 assisted tackles while playing in 11 games. He led the team with 4.5 tackles for loss along with being second on the team with 1.5 sacks.

Coach Hazzard's Take:  "Emotional leader for us on defense.  Tackled very well in space and was our best blitzer."
