Storm Drops Season Opener to Edinboro

EDINBORO, P.A. – The Lake Erie College football team opened the 2017 campaign today as they fell to Edinboro University, 30-3.

The Storm received the opening kickoff and was moving the ball down field behind strong running from Desmon Turner (Cedar Bluff, Ala. / Fort Payne) as he took his opening carry of the game around the end for a gain of 11 yards.  The drive was cut short due to a fumble.  After the turnover, the Fighting Scots drove the ball down inside the five yard line of the Storm.  Lake Erie's defense held strong and forced a turnover on downs to keep the game deadlocked at 0-0 with 9:24 minutes remaining in the opening quarter.  Edinboro broke the scoring drought on their second drive of the game when they connected on a 26 yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter.  Late in the first quarter Dylan Starks (Fremont, Ohio / Fremont Ross) intercepted a Fighting Scots pass and returned it 17 yards to the Edinboro 25 yard line, to end the first quarter.

The Storm was unable to convert the turnover into points, and trailed 3-0 early in the second quarter.  After the teams traded possessions the Fighting Scots added to their lead with a 28 yard touchdown run, to take a 10-0 lead with 8:08 remaining in the half.  The Storm threatened numerous times in the second quarter but were unable to cut into the lead, and entered the half behind, 10-0.

The Storm came out of the locker room ready to play as they forced an Edinboro punt.  The ensuing Lake Erie drive spanned 10 plays and was culminated by a Michael Muzic (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) field goal, to cut the lead to 10-3 with just under seven minutes remaining in the third quarter.  The Fighting Scots answered quickly with a 34 yard touchdown pass, which made the score 17-3 with 5:48 remaining in the third quarter.  Later in the third quarter Thomas Covington (Tampa, Florida / Tampa Bay Tech.) forced a fumble for the Storm defense, but the teams entered the fourth quarter with the score set at 17-3.

The fourth quarter started with a long Edinboro drive that ended in a touchdown to provide the Fighting Scots with a 24-3 lead.  The Storm defense was able to force a pair of fumbles in the fourth quarter as Covington forced and second fumble and Zach Jude (Canal Winchester, Ohio / Bloom Carroll) also forced a fumble.  However, the Storm offense was unable to capitalize, and late in the fourth quarter Edinboro went up 30-3 as they scored a defensive touchdown.  The Storm lost the game 30-3.

The Storm offense was led by Turner as he carried the ball 17 times for 107 yards, his longest rush on the day went for 26 yards.  Also making an impact on offense was David Wright (Eulcid, Ohio / Euclid) as he had four receptions for 79 yards, with a bulk of those yards coming on a 41 yard catch and run.

Defensively, the Storm was led by Covington as he tied a team high with nine tackles and also forced a pair of fumbles in the game.  Jude also had nine tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble for the Lake Erie defense.

Lake Erie will return to the gridiron Saturday (Sept. 9) when they host Tiffin in the Storm's home opener.
