PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College football team was in action today as they fell to Tiffin University, 58-7 in their home opener.
The Dragons received the ball to open the game, and took their opening drive down the field for a touchdown. The Dragons had a four play 30 yard drive capped off by a 26 yard touchdown rush, to give Tiffin a 6-0 lead, as they missed the extra point. The ensuing drive for the Storm started off promising as Desmon Turner (Cedar Bluff, Ala. / Fort Payne) rushed around the end for 12 yards on the opening play of the drive. The Lake Erie drive later stalled and they punted back to the Dragons. Tiffin efficiently moved the ball down field and finished off the nine play 75 yard drive with a 17 yard touchdown rush to put the Dragons up, 13-0 with just over five minutes remaining in the opening quarter. The teams traded a couple of three and out drives to end the first quarter, and the Storm trailed to enter the second quarter.
Tiffin had the ball to open the second quarter as they drove the ball inside the Storm five yard line. The Lake Erie defense held strong as they forced a Tiffin field goal, to give the Dragons a 16-0 edge. Over the course of the second quarter, Tiffin scored three more touchdowns and took a commanding 37-0 lead into the intermission.
The Storm showed some fight as they came out of the locker room and forced a Dragons three and out that was highlighted by Isaiah Wheeler (Copley, Ohio / Copley/Stark State) and Zach Jude (Canal Winchester, Ohio / Bloom Carroll) making a tackle for a loss. Lake Erie took their second possession of the third quarter and found the endzone. The six play 68 yard drive was capped off by a 49 yard touchdown rush from Antwan Harris (Youngstown, Ohio / Austintown Fitch) with just over eight minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Dragons quickly responded as they took their next drive, nine plays and covered 66 yards that was finished off by a 12 yard run up the middle, to make the score 44-7 to enter the fourth quarter.
The Dragons added a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter and won the 58-7.
The Storm offense was led by Harris as carried the ball 13 times for 87 yards, which is 6.7 yards per carry. The receiving group was led by Riley Fredericksen (Holly Springs, North Carolina / Middle Creek) as he had two catches for 25 yards. Fredericksen had the highlight of the day for the Storm as he had a leaping one-handed catch along the sideline.
Defensively, Lake Erie was led by Thomas Covington (Tampa, Florida / Tampa Bay Tech.) as he had 15 total tackles on the day including a sack. Wheeler and Jude pitched in as they had eight and seven total tackles respectively.
Lake Erie will return to the gridiron Saturday (Sept. 16) on homecoming as they take on Urbana with the game set to start at 3 pm.
