STORM LOOKS TO CLIMB ABOVE .500 IN FINAL NON-CONFERENCE CONTEST: The Lake Erie College men's basketball team looks to move above .500 as it hosts Urbana University in the final non-conference contest of the season. The Storm is coming off a successful second-place showing at the Winter Park Rotary Tangerine Tournament Dec. 28-29. Lake Erie defeated host Rollins College, 79-65, in the opening round game and fell to West Georgia University, 58-56, in the tournament final. Both teams were in the "Also Receiving Votes" section of the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) NCAA Division II Top 25 poll.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE STORM: Lake Erie finished in second place at the Winter Park Rotary Tangerine Tournament in Fla. The Storm shocked host Rollins, who has been ranked as high as 10th nationally this season, 79-65 in the opening round. Lake Erie was led by a monster night from sophomore Rich Austin. The 6-6 center scored a career-high 24 points and added a game-high nine rebounds. Classmate guard Riley Thomas carried much of the load as well with a season-high 18 points and redshirt freshman Jamil Dudley added 12 points off the bench with three steals. Against West Georgia (13-1), the Storm fell 58-56. Lake Erie was led by Austin for the third straight game with 12 points and nine rebounds. Also in double figures for the Storm was sophomore guard Nate Tait with 10 points along with four rebounds. Austin and Tait both were named to the All-Tournament team.
SERIES NOTES: Lake Erie has faced Urbana five times over the past three seasons, going 2-3 overall. Last season, the Storm fell to the Blue Knights on the road in overtime, 82-78, on January 6, 2011. Graduated guard Ethan Bradshaw scored a career-high 40 points in the loss and set a Lake Erie record with 22 made free throws.
AUSTIN ALL-IN: Sophomore Rich Austin has made a huge leap after a solid freshman season. Austin is averaging 14.6 ppg. and 7.3 rpg., leading the team in both categories. He has reached double figure scoring in eight of the 10 games this season. The Cleveland St. Ignatius grad averaged 6.0 ppg. as a freshman.
OPPOSITION POSITION: Urbana (3-7) has lost six of its past seven games after starting the season 2-0. The Blue Knights feature a balanced scoring attack with four players averaging double figures, led by guard Marcus Pearl at 12.7 ppg.
LOOK AHEAD: The Storm gets into the heart of conference play starting Saturday, as they travel to Ohio Dominican University for the start of GLIAC play with a 3:00 p.m. tipoff.
