Men's Basketball Adds Three More Signees to Recruiting Class

PAINESVILLE, OHIO – The Lake Erie College men's basketball team added three standout high school players to go along with early signee Sean Howard (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) and form the Storm's 2013 recruiting class.  Head Coach Cliff Hunt announced Tuesday (April 23) the newcomers who signed as part of the regular signing period earlier this week.

"We are really excited to move forward with the addition of this very talented group," Hunt said. "These four players are all from very strong, winning programs and each of them have been integral parts of their team's success."

The three new signees are forwards Mike Morris (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) and Nick Wells (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) and guard Nick Deitsch (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange).

Both Morris and Wells measure in at 6-6 and between 220-225 pounds, giving the Storm added size in the front court.  Deitsch is 6-2 and 170 pounds with the versatility to play all three guard spots around the perimeter.

Each player averaged over 14 points per game in their senior season, led by Morris' nearly 20-point average that led the county.  He was also Hancock County's top three-point shooter last year.  All three earned multiple all-district or all-county honors throughout their careers.

The 5-9 Howard signed during the early period in the fall and capped his high school career by leading his team to a 16-6 record and top-10 ranking while collecting all-county and All-Indiana accolades.

A complete breakdown of each signee follows.

Nick Deitsch
Guard | 6-2 | 170 lbs
Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange

PRIOR TO LAKE ERIE: Twice named to the All-Ohio Capital Conference and All-Ohio Central District teams at Olentangy Orange High School where he played for coach Anthony Calo… set school single-game scoring record with 35 points against Hilliard Bradley… also set school record by hitting 62 three-pointers during his senior season when he averaged 16.4 points and nearly three assists per game… was a teammate of current Storm player Andy Bosley when team won the Ohio Capital Conference championship his junior season… led team to district finals for first time in school history as a senior… member of National Honor Society.

Coach Hunt's Comments:  "Nick really burst onto the scene last summer and throughout his senior season.  He is a major perimeter scoring threat with good athletic ability that will allow him to defend multiple positions.  His extreme competitiveness and versatility will help him compete for time in our rotation at any of the three guard spots.

Mike Morris
Forward | 6-6 | 220 lbs
New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine

PRIOR TO LAKE ERIE: Was a three-time All-Hancock County selection and two-time Hancock County Player of the Year while playing at New Palestine High School for coach Adam Barton… named team most valuable player twice and was also a two-time All-Hoosier Heritage Conference pick… scored over 1,000 career points… as a senior was an Associated Press All-Indiana honorable mention selection when he averaged 19.8 points and 6.3 rebounds per game… led conference in scoring and three-point shooting (46%) as a senior… helped team to pair of county and sectional championships… member of National Honor Society and an Indiana Basketball Coaches Association First-Team Academic All-State honoree.

Coach Hunt's Comments: "Mike is a combo-forward with an advanced offensive game that allows him to score both inside and outside.  He had an incredible high school career as a big scorer and team leader throughout his time at New Palestine High. Mike is physically ready and will be able to compete in the very physical GLIAC, but has the advantage of being able to stretch the defense with his deep shooting range. He is a very smart player and excellent student. Mike will be able to play anywhere up front, from small forward to the post, which should give him a lot of opportunities very early in his career."

Nick Wells
Forward | 6-6 | 225 lbs
Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary

PRIOR TO LAKE ERIE: Was a two-time all-district selection and three-year starter in high school at St. Vincent-St. Mary where he played for coach Dru Joyce… earned All-Ohio honorable mention as a senior when he averaged 14 points and nine rebounds per game, shooting better than 56 percent from the field… played on four district and two regional championship teams… member of Irish state championship team in 2011 and OHSAA Division II runners-up in 2013.

Coach Hunt's Comments:  "Nick brings a physical presence and toughness to our team. He was a double-figure scorer and the leading rebounder for a team that played against some of the best competition in the country. Nick has a great understanding and feel for the game, along with the heart of a champion. His presence will be felt immediately in our program."

Sean Howard (Early Signee in Fall 2012)

Coach Hunt's Comments: "Sean is a pure point guard who led his team to a strong season as a senior, leading them to a top-10 ranking in the hot-bed of Indiana basketball and himself earning all-state honorable mention.  He is a leader on and off the floor and will be looked on to contribute early in his career.
