Storm Defeats Davis and Elkins in Season Opener

OWENSBORO, Ky.-- The Lake Erie College men's basketball team kicked off the 2013-14 regular season in Owensboro, Ky. for a neutral site game agaisnt Davis and Elkins College Friday (Nov. 8), defeating the Senators 76-66.

The Senators jumped out to an early 6-0 advantage and grew their lead to 10-3 before the Storm was able to tie the game up at 15 off the power of freshmen Nick Wells (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary), Michael Morris (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) and Sean Howard (Indianapolis, Ohio/Lawrence North). The Storm took their first lead of the game, 17-15, off a pair of free throws from Wells. The Storm had a first half lead as large as six before Davis and Elkins charged back to take a brief 31-30 lead. After trading points, a Tom Parker (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) lay-up gave the Storm a 36-34 lead at the half. 

Wells led the Storm with 12 first half points while senior guard Riley Thomas (Cardington, Ohio/Cardington-Lincoln) added ten. 

Davis and Elkins opened the second half with a three-pointer to pull ahead 37-36 before Morris put the Storm back ahead, 38-37. After the Storm pulled ahead by six, the Senators fought back and got within two at 45-43 before the Storm went on a 5-0 run that ultimately put the game out of reach. 

Thomas ended the game with 17 points to lead the Storm, while also assisting on four others. Wells finished with 13 points and a team-hgih seven rebounds. Morris was other double-digit scorer for the Storm with 10 points. Parker and Howard had nine points each. 

Davis and Elkin's Devin Miller led all scorers with 19 points. Tivius Guthrie (13), Juwan Strothers (12) and Bruce Komakech (11) also scored in double-digits for the Senators. 

As a team, the Senators outshot the Storm (48.8%-41.7%) however, the Storm excelled defensiveley, forcing 24 Senator turnovers and had nine steals, led by three apiece by Roy Alexander (Columbus, Ohio/Walnut Ridge) and Parker. Andy Bosley (Columbus, Ohio/Orange) had two blocks. The teams were even with 33 rebounds apiece. 

The Storm returns to action Saturday (Nov. 9) to face Kentucky Wesleyan College.
