Big Second Half Lifts Storm Over Northwood

PAINESVILLE, Ohio— A 42 point second half pushed the Lake Erie College men's basketball team past Northwood University Sunday (Jan. 4), as they defeated the Timberwolves 72-48 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest in Painesville.

The teams traded baskets in a back-and-forth start of the game, with the Timberwolves gaining a 9-7 advantage at the first media timeout.  Three pointers by Collin Barth (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and Nick Wells (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) gave the Storm a two point lead.  The Timberwolves regained the lead, 17-14, but the Storm tied it at 20.  Trailing 23-22, Michael Morris (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine)  hit a three, followed by a thunderous dunk and a three by Jamil Dudley (Massillon, Ohio/Massillon) to give the Storm a seven point lead, 30-23, at the half.

Dudley led the Storm with 11 points in the opening half.  Wells had six while Andy Bosley (Columbus, Ohio/Orange) had five.  Morris and Barth had three apiece.  The Storm outrebounded the Timberwolves 33-22.  Throughout the first half, there were 15 ties and lead changes. 

Dudley converted two three pointers in the opening minute-and-a-half of the second half to increase the Storm lead.  The Timberwolves brought the lead down back to seven but a traditional three point play by Bosley extended the lead to 10.  Following a media timeout, Morris gave the Storm their biggest lead of the game, 48-35, with a three-pointer.  A jumper by Nick Deitsch (Lewis Center, Ohio/Orange) and a three from Wells increased the Storm lead to 18 midway through the second half.  After a media timeout, the Storm went on a 6-0 run, with four points coming from Roy Alexander (Columbus, Ohio/Walnut Ridge), leading to a Northwood timeout.  Down the stretch, the Storm led by as much as 28 as they sealed the win.

Dudley finished the game with 19 points, eight rebounds and two assists.  Wells had thirteen points and three rebounds.  Bosley scored 12 points and had four assists and five rebounds.  Morris had six points and six rebounds while Alexander had five points and five rebounds.  Trey Howard (Lima, Ohio/Lima Shawnee) grabbed four rebounds while scoring six points.  Steve Walczak (Columbus, Ohio/Olentangy) also had four rebounds in addition to two points.  Barth had three points and two rebounds.  Sean Howard (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) had five rebounds.  Deitsch had four points and four rebounds.  Jordan Michael (Fairborn, Ohio/Fairborn) had two points while Ryan Nutter (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) had two rebounds.

The Storm shot 39.3% but 50% in the second half.  They were dominate on the boards, outrebounding the Timberwolves 56-36.  The Storm converted 16-of-19 (84.2%) of their free-throw attempts, including 12-of-13 (92.3%) in the second half. 

The Storm is back in action Thursday (Jan. 8) when they travel north to face Michigan Tech University.
