Storm Falls in Back-and-Forth Battle Against Walsh

PAINESVILLE, Ohio— The Lake Erie College men's basketball team fell in a close battle against Walsh University, 85-76, Saturday (Feb. 6) in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division play.

The game featured 17 lead changes and nine ties.

Sean Howard (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) scored the first points for the Storm with a three.  The Cavaliers answered with a 6-2 run to take a 6-5 lead.  For the second time, Howard hit a three to give the Storm the lead.  Trey Howard (Lima, Ohio/Lima Shawnee) followed up with his own three but the Cavaliers cut the lead to two, 11-9, at the first media timeout.

Following the media timeout, Sean Howard hit a deep two to extend the lead to four.  After a Cavalier free-throw, Sean Howard hit his third three of the contest to give the Storm a 16-10 lead.  However, the Cavaliers went on an 8-2 run to tie the game at 18 with 10 minutes to play in the opening half. 

The Cavaliers took the lead after the media timeout. Bosley (Columbus, Ohio/Orange) hit a three to bring the game within one.  Trey Howard hit a layup-and-one to give the Storm the lead back, 24-22, with four-and-a-half minutes to play in the half. 

The back-and-forth continued as the Cavaliers regained the lead once again with a 5-2 run.  Collin Barth (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) tied the game at 29 with a three.  Right before the final buzzer, Trey Howard found Brogan Scott (Wadsworth, Ohio/Highland) for a layup to give the Storm a 31-29 halftime lead.

Sean Howard led the Storm with 11 first half points.  Bosley had seven while Trey Howard had six with four assists.  The Storm shot 44.4% (12-of-27) from the floor and hit six threes.

The Cavaliers tied the game with the first basket of the second half.  The teams exchanged the lead multiple times before a pair of threes by the Cavaliers gave them a 46-41 lead at the media timeout.

The Storm fought back after the timeout, cutting the lead to two, 50-48.  However, the Cavaliers went on a 5-2 run to gain a 55-50 at the midway mark.  Bosley came out of the media timeout with a three pointer to cut the lead to two.  Barth followed with a tough layup to tie the game at 55. 

After trading scoring possessions, Roy Alexander (Columbus, Ohio/Walnut Ridge) hit a three to give the Storm a 60-59 lead. Steve Walczak (Columbus, Ohio/Olentangy) was fouled while tipping a ball in, converting the free-throw to extend the lead to four. 

The Cavaliers were quick to answer, scoring the ensuing four points.  Sean Howard continued to shoot well from deep, hitting his fourth three to give the Storm the lead back, 66-63. 

Following the final media timeout, the Cavaliers took the lead, 75-68 with just under two minutes to play.  In the closing minute, the Storm hit several shot but it was not enough to overcome the Cavaliers lead.

Sean Howard finished with 21 points and three assists.  Bosley netted 14 off the bench while Barth had 11.  Trey Howard was also in double digits with 10 points with four rebounds and four assists.  Walczak and Scott shred the team-high with seven rebounds.

The Storm shot 46.8% (29-of-62) for the game, hitting 13 threes.  They committed just seven turnovers.  The bench of the Storm outscored their Walsh counterparts 29-7. 

Lake Erie is back in action Thursday (Feb. 11) at home against Wayne State University.
