Storm Drops Home Opener to Edinboro

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College men's basketball team made their 2016-17 debut at the Osborne Center on Wednesday (Nov. 16) night. The Storm got off to a hot start but the Fighting Scots of Edinboro University finished on top with an 87-75 win.

Lake Erie took advantage of some good offensive rebounding as the Storm turned five offensive rebounds into eight points in the first five minutes. Lake Erie held an 8-0 lead with four points and three offensive rebounds from Jordan Humphrey (Columbus, Ohio / Westerville South). Over the next five minutes, Edinboro responded with a 12-4 run tying the game at 12 with 10:25 left in the first half.

The Fighting Scots took their first lead of the game and turned it into a six point lead at 20-14. Lake Erie chipped away at the lead before a Humphrey layup tied the game at 25-25, capping an 11-5 run. Jaymon Mason scored three of his 31 points on a three point play, regaining the 28-25 lead. On the next possession, Nick Wells (Akron, Ohio / St. Vincent-St. Mary) drilled a three pointer to tie the game again. The teams exchanged baskets with Edinboro taking a 36-34 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Edinboro hit 47% (15-32) of their shots in the first half, compared to Lake Erie's 42% (16-38) shooting percentage. Wells led the team with nine points at the half.

Wells opened the second half with an offensive board and putback, tying the game for the sixth time. Each team went back and forth with baskets as the teams tied three more times. With the Storm down 51-48, Humphrey knocked down a three ball, tying the game with 13:48 left in the game.

With 12:48 left in the half, Mikael Anderson converted a three point play for Edinboro. The three point play gave the Fighting Scots a 56-53 lead and that was the last time the Storm was within striking distance. Sean Howard (Indianapolis, Ind. / Lawrence North) made a pair of free throws, cutting the lead to 56-55.

Edinboro opened a nine point lead before a Lake Erie timeout at the 7:57 mark. The Storm got as close as four points but the Fighting Scots closed out an 87-75 win.

Edinboro shot 60% (15-25) and they finished the game with a 52% (30-57) shooting percentage. Lake Erie finished with a 44% shooting percentage, making 33-of-75 shots.

Humphrey finished with a double-double, scoring 20 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Wells added 18 points while Howard scored 13.

The Storm will travel to Seton Hill on Tuesday (Nov. 22) for a non-conference road matchup.
