PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College men's basketball team was defeated by Northern Michigan, 82-67. Head coach Kyle Conley said "the first half effort was unacceptable, and in the second half the team played with better effort just couldn't overcome the first half deficit".
The Wildcats opened the game with the first five points as they scored on their first two possessions of the game. The Storm responded with a quick four points to make the score 5-4 in favor of Northern Michigan three minutes into the game. The Wildcats lead grew to eight (14-6) by the first media timeout of the game. Out of the timeout Sean Howard (Indianapolis, Ind. / Lawrence North) hit a layup to cut the lead to six before the Huskies opened up a 12-0 run to take a 26-10 lead with just over eight minutes remaining in the half. The Storm halted the run on a bucket by Gabe Kynard (Toledo, Ohio / St. John's) and a layup by Howard. The Wildcats continued their strong play and entered the half ahead, 44-21.
At the intermission, Lake Erie was led by Nick Wells (Akron, Ohio / St. Vincent-St. Mary) as he had seven points and a pair of rebounds. Kynard pitched in with six points, a pair of steals, and two assists.
The Storm opened the second half on a 10-3 run that was sparked by Ryan Middendorf (West Chester, Ohio / Lakota East) as he hit a pair of three pointers to score six of the 10 points during the run. The run forced a Northern Michigan timeout with just over 17 minutes remaining. After a two minute back and forth battle the Storm went on a 10-2 run to cut the Wildcats lead to eight, 57-49. Jordan Humphry (Columbus, Ohio / Westerville South) lead the run for the Storm scoring eight of the Storm's 10 points during the run. Lake Erie was unable to cut the lead any further as Northern Michigan went on to win the game, 82-67.
Coach Conley said "Kynard and Humphry played well on both ends of the court. It was the best that each had played in their young careers".
The Storm was led by Kynard as he had a team high 17 points, and also led the team in assists with seven. Wells chipped in with 16 points and eight rebounds. Also scoring double-digit points for the Storm was Humphry with 14 points.
Lake Erie will return to the hardwood Thursday (Dec. 15) when they travel to take on Lake Superior State with the game set to tip at 7:30 p.m.
