NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Lake Erie College men's basketball team was in action today as they were defeated by Walsh University, 84-81.
The Storm jumped out to a 7-4 lead as they scored on their first three possessions of the game, with Sean Howard (Indianapolis, Ind. / Lawrence North), Jordan Humphrey (Columbus, Ohio / Westerville South), and Nick Wells (Akron, Ohio / St. Vincent-St. Mary) all contributing with a basket. The Cavaliers responded to take a 12-9 lead with just under 15 minutes left in the half. The Storm answered with a 7-0 run and regained a 16-12 advantage. The run was sparked by Howard as he had five of the seven points. Walsh continued to battle and regained a 20-19 lead at the second media timeout of the half. Out of the break the Cavaliers stretched their lead to 32-24, which forced a Lake Erie timeout with five minutes remaining in the half. Lake Erie continued to battle and entered the intermission down by seven, 39-32.
At the half, the Storm was led by Howard as he led all scorers with 15 points. Erron James (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville Central) provided a spark off the bench with eight points, on 2-3 shooting from behind the arc.
The Storm opened the second half as they battled all the way back to regain a 45-44 lead, which forced a Walsh timeout. Mitch Loomis (Malvern, Ohio / Malvern) sparked the Storm with a pair of layups, and the go ahead basket. The middle of the second half was a back and forth battle that saw the lead change hands eight different times in a five minute span, and the Storm held a 56-53 lead with just under 10 minutes in the game. The Cavaliers responded with an 8-0 run to take a 61-56 edge with just over seven minutes remaining in the game. Walsh entered the final media timeout of the game up seven, 66-59. The Storm continued to battle and cut the lead to one with six seconds left on a three pointer by Humphrey, but Lake Erie fell to Walsh, 84-81.
The Storm was led by Howard as he had 22 points and had a game high seven assists. Brogan Scott (Wadsworth, Ohio / Highland) added 13 points and four rebounds in the game for the Storm. Humphrey had a team high eight rebounds and pithed in with 11 points.
Lake Erie will return to the hardwood Thursday (Jan. 19) when they host Ashland University with the game set to tip at 7:30 p.m.
