ASHLAND, Ohio – The Lake Erie College men's basketball team opened their 2017-18 campaign with a loss to Ashland, 73-58.

The game started off with a bang as each team hit a three pointer on their opening possession.  Michael Morris (New Palestine, Ind. / New Palestine) hit the three for the Storm to tie the game at three points apiece.  Through the first six minutes of the game each teams traded buckets, as the game was tied on four separate occasions.  After a quick 5-0 run by the Eagles, the Storm answered right back with a 6-0 run to take an 18-17 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the first half.  The run was highlighted by Mitch Loomis (Malvern, Ohio / Malvern) and Jordan Humphrey (Columbus, Ohio / Westerville South) as each converted a layup during the run.  The game remained a hard fought battle as the teams were deadlocked at 22 points apiece at the eight minute media timeout in the first half.  Ashland ended the half on a 6-0 run, and took a 43-36 lead into the intermission.

The Eagles were able to extend their lead to open the second half, as they led 60-46 with just under 12 minutes remaining in the game.  The Storm continued to fight as they shut down Ashland over the final 4:14 minutes of action.  The defensive effort allowed Lake Erie to score three of the final four baskets in the game.  However, Ashland held on to win the game, 73-58.

The Storm was led by Gabe Kynard (Toledo, Ohio/ St. John's) as he had a team high in points with 15.  Erron James (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville Central) led the Storm in rebounds as he grabbed six total boards.  Lamont Rhodes (Bedford, Ohio / Bedford) made an impact on the defensive end as he had a game high two blocks, and grabbed three rebounds.

Lake Erie will return to the hardwood Sunday (Nov. 12) when they host Tiffin University with the game set to tip off at 12 p.m.
