Late Run Propels Storm Over Ohio Valley

VIENNA, W.V. – The Lake Erie College men's basketball team was in action today as they were victorious over Ohio Valley, 86-79.  With the win the Storm improves to 5-3 overall, and they were victorious in their Great Midwest Athletic Conference debut.   

The Storm opened the scoring on their first possession when Jordan Humphrey (Columbus, Ohio / Westerville South) converted a layup to give the Storm an early edge.  Lake Erie opened the game on an 8-3 run that was capped by a Harrison Riggs (Toledo, Ohio / St. John's) layup, with just under 16 minutes remaining in the half.  A Lamont Rhodes (Bedford, Ohio / Bedford) block for the Storm forced the media timeout.  Out of the timeout, the Fighting Scots went on a 6-0 run that was halted by a Gabe Kynard (Toledo, Ohio / St. John's) three pointer.  Lake Erie held the lead at the under 12 minute media timeout, 15-14.  Out of the break, Ohio Valley grabbed an 18-15 lead, which forced a quick Storm timeout.  Lake Erie responded with a 6-0 run, the run was capped by a pair of foul shots from Kynard.  The run allowed the Storm to regain a 21-18 advantage with just under nine minutes remaining in the half.  The middle part of the first half was back and forth, as the Storm held a 39-33 lead at the final media timeout of the first half.  Lake Erie closed the half strong as Rhodes scored on three straight possessions, to give the Storm a 49-41 edge at the intermission. 

Out of the lockerroom, Lake Erie stretched their lead to 13 early in the second half as Rhodes had a dunk and Humphrey hit a jumper.  The Fighting Scots answered with an 8-0 run to cut the Storm lead to five.  Ohio Valley continued to play well as they took a 69-67 advantage with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game.  The Fighting Scots added to their lead, as they lead 67-57 with 9:06 remaining in the game.  The game was a back and forth battle as the Fighting Scots held a six point lead with 4:54 minutes left to play.  The Storm closed the game on a 13-0 run over the remainder of the game and won, 86-79.  The run was led by Kynard as he had six of the 13 points, and assisted on a Ryan Middendorf (West Chester, Ohio / Lakota East) three pointer during the run.  Rhodes put an exclamation point on the win as he ended the game with a dunk for Lake Erie.   

The Storm was led by Rhodes as he had a double-double with career highs in points with 27, and rebounds with 14.  Kynard also had a double-double for Lake Erie as he had 19 points and grabbed a career high 14 rebounds.   Michael Morris (New Palestine, Ind. / New Palestine) and Brogan Scott (Wadsworth, Ohio / Highland) each added 10 points for the Storm, as Morris shot 50 percent from behind the arc. 

Head Coach Kyle Conley said, "This was not our best performance, but we are excited to win our first ever GMAC game on the road in a tough environment.  Lamont was terrific, as he really impacted the game at both ends of the floor". 

Lake Erie will be back in action Saturday (Dec. 9) when they host Shawnee State with the game set to tip at 4 p.m.
