Storm Falls in Battle With #21 Oilers, 65-59

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College men's basketball team battled the #21 University of Findlay Oilers on Saturday (Jan. 6) afternoon at the Osborne Center. The Storm fell, 65-59.

Lake Erie scored eight of the first nine points of the contest over the first three minutes of the game, holding an 8-1 lead. The Storm held a 10-3 advantage at the under 16 media timeout with David Dunnigan (Cleveland, Ohio / Padua) and Brogan Scott (Wadsworth, Ohio / Wadsworth) each scoring four points during the run. Over the next four minutes, Findlay trimmed the lead to 10-9 with a 6-0 run. The Oilers tied the contest at 12 with a three pointer with 11:12 remaining in the first half. After the Oilers tied the game, they extended the lead to 19-14 at the under eight media timeout. Erron James (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville Central) tied the game at 19 with a three pointer off of an assist from Dunnigan with 5:43 left. Ryan Middendorf (West Chester, Ohio / Lakota East) followed with a three pointer of his own as the Storm led 22-19. The teams exchanged baskets as Lake Erie led 24-21 at the final media timeout of the first half. A Mitch Loomis (Malvern, Ohio / Malvern) layup pushed the lead to five but the Oilers closed the gap to 28-27 at the half.

Findlay began the second half with a 12-5 run as the Oilers lead by six with 16 minutes left in the second half. The Oilers added a free throw for a seven point advantage before James nailed a three pointer. Lake Erie trailed 40-36 at the under 16 media timeout. Jordan Humphrey (Columbus, Ohio / Westerville South) followed a three pointer as the Storm pulled within two at 41-39. Lamont Rhodes (Bedford, Ohio / Bedford) tied the game with a layup as the game was knotted at 41. The Oilers followed with five straight points as they led 46-41 with 11:44 left. Lake Erie slimmed the lead to three four times over the next six minutes as the teams went basket for basket. Findlay led 59-53 at the under four media timeout. Scott scored on a layup as he pulled the Storm within four with 2:34 left. The Oilers held the lead for the final two minutes, holding on for a 65-59 victory.

The Storm was led by Gabe Kynard (Toledo, Ohio / St. John's) as he had 10 points, four rebounds, and three steals in the game.  Scott added 10 points and grabbed three rebounds in the game.  Humphrey and Middendorf each had eight points and both grabbed four rebounds.  

The Storm will return to the court on Thursday (Jan. 11) at Malone for a Great Midwest matchup at 6:00 PM.
