PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College men's basketball team defeated the Alderson Broaddus University Battlers on Monday (Jan. 15) night by a final score of 73-63.
"We had a short turnaround for this team following our game at Walsh," said Storm head coach Kyle Conley. "Alderson Broaddus has one of the best trios in the conference. We knew we had to defend hard against them. We did a great job as they had to work for their points tonight."
After Alderson Broaddus started the game with a three pointer, Lake Erie responded with five straight points. Lamont Rhodes (Bedford, Ohio / Bedford) hit a jumper and Harrison Riggs (Toledo, Ohio / St. John's) followed with a three pointer as Lake Erie led 5-3 two minutes in. Gabe Kynard (Toledo, Ohio / St. John's) gave the Storm a 9-7 lead with a layup prior to the under 16 media timeout. The Battlers tied the game at nine before Lake Erie answered with an 8-0 run. The Storm forced a Battlers timeout up 17-9 with 13:15 left in the first half, after a three pointer from Ryan Middendorf (West Chester, Ohio / Lakota East). The teams exchanged three pointers as the Storm led 20-12 with 11:45 left in the first half. Lake Erie pushed the advantage to as many as 12 but the Battlers trimmed it to nine prior to the under eight media timeout. Lake Erie used a 5-0 run with five minutes to go in the half as Jordan Humphrey (Columbus, Ohio / Westerville South) had two consecutive layups. The Storm held a 34-23 lead with four minutes left in the half. Lake Erie closed the half with a 40-27 lead as Kynard made a driving layup in the closing seconds.
Kynard opened the second half with a layup that pushed the Storm's advantage to 15. The Battlers trimmed the lead to seven before Michael Morris (New Palestine, Ind. / New Palestine) made his fourth three pointer of the night. Lake Erie led 48-38 with 14:30 left in the second half. The teams exchanged baskets over the next seven minutes. Kynard drilled a three pointer that lifted the Storm to a 57-44 lead before the under eight media timeout. Rhodes converted a pair of shots from the free throw line as the Storm led by 15 with seven minutes left. The Battlers responded to slowly trim the lead to eight with five minutes to go. Kynard answered with his second three pointer of the night as the Storm regained a double-digit lead. The Storm led by as many as 12 late and sealed the victory with six free throws down the stretch. Lake Erie swept Alderson Broaddus with a 73-63 victory.
Kynard finished with a team-high 22 points on seven-of-14 shooting, including six free throws. "Gabe is a really good basketball player that is continuing to gain confidence in every game he plays in. He played well on both ends tonight."
Morris added 16 points off the bench, with 12 of them coming from three pointers. "It's been a struggle for him coming back from injury. He's a team player and continued to work at it. He was due for a game like this and tonight he was shooting the ball well."
Erron James (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville Central) led the Storm with eight rebounds. The Storm defense forced Alderson Broaddus into 14 turnovers.
The Storm will continue the home stand with a home matchup against Ohio Dominican on Saturday (Jan. 20).
